Review: The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems

Willems, Mo. (2012). The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? Hyperion Books for Children. *Activity sheets at the end of this post! Ok. I had an ulterior motive for wanting to review this book, because, frankly, Mo Willems books don't really need to be reviewed. They are almost all, singularly awesome. And the Pigeon series...*chef's kiss* The real reason is, I found some cute activity sheets to go with it that I wanted to share with you all. So, those are at the bottom of the post but you get a […]

Review: If the Moon by Matthew Burgess

Burgess, Matthew. (2026). If the Moon. Stonefruit Studio If the Moon is a soothing poem spread across a picture book (Matthew Forsythe, the illustrator did Aggie and the Ghost, Adventure Time and more!), centered around the powerful word "If." What if. At first, it might cause thoughts of anxiety (which is my habit, and I read this on a particularly stressful day, so, yes, that was the first emotion that came up)... A child sailing in a colorful sea, under the moon and star lit sky, in a […]

  33. Not a Hogwarts Letter, But Close Enough

The personal struggle with a family member I mentioned before wasn’t the only emotional struggle in my life, our lives.

Our daughter just celebrated her 5th birthday, and we are ready for the “next chapter” in her life: This August, she will officially be starting preschool (in her daycare center)! She has been craving more cognitive challenges and stimulation in the past few months which they weren’t able to give her for one reason or another. So we are incredibly excited to see her take this next step. It took a lot of advocating behind the scenes to get everything lined up, but seeing her big smile when she got THAT letter (not to Hogwarts, but for preschool) makes it all worth it.

I did hit a big wall in the past few months. Emotional burnout at its finest. I really hope I can now leave all the drama, stress, frustration, anger, feeling of hopelessness behind me and focus on things that are fun instead!

We will see how it goes with Blaugust arriving in only a bit more than a week! It also coincides with a vacation we’re taking. I hope I will get to blog about games in the evening, though.
