  1. Wieland Hoban explains #philosemitism in Germany:
"It’s very difficult to have a general sense of Jews as ordinary people who are part of the country’s population. Many people have an image frozen in time of Jews as the victims of the Nazis, who were the parents or grandparents of many Germans.

"In some cases, this leads to an over-compensation which means that people want to have a particularly favourable idea of Jews. They make a point of doing what they think is supporting Jews. Including supporting Israel, going on holiday in Israel, or cultivating connections to Israel thinking this somehow revives Jewishness."

  2. The German state has bound its own re-birth into the “realm of civilized nations” through a particular protective relationship with the figure of the Jew, where (always Jewish) Israelis are a prime embodiment of Jewish life.

"As long as the figure of the Jew remains a medium through which German post-unification identity is articulated and experienced, the performance of Jewish collective difference and political agency will be exclusively relegated to the State of Israel. The figure of the Palestinian, as well as Palestinians’ political subjecthood and demands for equality will, in turn, be addressed as either an annoyance to be ignored or a threat to be criminalized—rather than as a crucial prism through which the multiple layers of legitimatized moral violence in Germany have to be recognized."

  3. Quoting Marcel Möring: “Jews get protection in exchange for right-wing migration politics.”

"De joden krijgen bescherming in ruil voor rechtse migratiepolitiek."

Trust the #Dutch to put it bluntly…

Writing in De Groene Amsterdammer, Möring criticizes right-wing politicians, particularly Geert Wilders, for exploiting recent events in #Amsterdam and concerns about #antisemitism for political gain. He particularly objects to what he calls disingenuous "#philosemitism."

[…] There's a saying among Jews that nothing is worse than an antisemite - except for a philosemite. An antisemite is someone who harbors irrational aversion towards Jews. A philosemite is someone who professes an excessive, irrational love for Jews, usually because they have an ulterior motive. Christians do it because they're theologically troubled by Jesus's Jewishness and can't seem to distinguish between Israel and 'the Jews.' The political right does it because they see political advantage in casting themselves as protectors of the Jews.

While acknowledging #antisemitism exists within some Islamic communities, Möring argues it's overly simplistic to attribute it solely to this group.

  4. Philosemitism in History
    Sutcliffe and Karp, 2012

"from this dominant perspective philosemitism is almost always regarded as deeply suspicious, sharing with antisemitism a trafficking in distorted, exaggerated, and exceptionalist views of Jews and Judaism."

"the philosemitism of many Christians has been motivated by a conversionist desire ultimately to erase Jewish distinctiveness altogether."

  5. #Antisemitism must be vigorously challenged as a pillar of Eurocentric white supremacy.
#Zionism is a specific political ideology and form of ethnonationalism that drove the establishment of the state of Israel and maintains the illegal occupation of Palestine.

"The primary goal of the IHRA definition is not to fight antisemitism or to protect Jewish communities from racist attacks, predominantly carried out by white supremacists; it is a mechanism to suppress advocacy for Palestinian rights. Of the definition’s 11 examples, seven deem criticism of Israel or Zionism to be antisemitic."

  6. Deborah Feldman: “Germans tend to cut off any attempt at constructive conversation with the much-favoured phrase that topic is much too complicated.
[…] Non-affiliated voices are often silenced or discredited, replaced by the louder ones of Germans whose Holocaust-guilt complexes cause them to fetishise Jewishness to the point of obsessive-compulsive embodiment.”

  8. To use your preferred terminology then @paninid One hates a people because of who they are. The other loves a people because of who they are. And yes, in practice, that "love" does exclude the "other".

Still two sides of the same coin. Still racism. @NickSchwanck

  9. @DropBear @NickSchwanck

I think that #philosemitism does not mean “discrimination in favor”, the etymology of the prefix “philo” doesn’t imply exclusion, but appreciation or love for.

A philosopher loves wisdom, but doesn’t necessarily discriminate against those who are not wise.

  10. One discriminates against people because of who they are @paninid the other discriminates in favour of people because of who they are. They're two sides of the same coin.

  11. "We speak with award-winning Palestinian American artist and filmmaker Emily Jacir, whose event in Berlin in October was canceled after Israel launched its ongoing assault on Gaza. Jacir decries a pattern of “harassment, baseless smear campaigns, canceling shows, canceling talks” conducted against Palestinian artists in Germany and around the world. “It’s very much part of a coordinated movement,” she says, connecting global censorship of diasporic Palestinian voices with the violent “targeted destruction of culture in Gaza,” which she calls a “part of genocide.”

  12. As Rita Jabri Markwell put it:
    • trauma is a genuine wound;
    • fragility serves as an exercise of power over oppressed peoples.
In the Zionist case, fragility depends on genuine wounds (collective Jewish historical trauma) to leverage its power and silence dissenters.

  13. Nicole Narea, "a first-generation American", wrote: All three [university] presidents refused to say that students should be punished for invoking those [hateful] phrases across the board — only when it rises to the level of harassment, discrimination, or incitement to violence.

“I have little doubt that if student activists actually were issuing unequivocal calls for the genocide of Jews on university campuses, they would be swiftly disciplined by their administrations — and rightly so,” Berkman said. “This should have been an easy question for Magill, Kornbluth, and Gay to answer, but because they felt they couldn’t contest the description of pro-Palestinian rhetoric as inherently genocidal, despite knowing that description to be untrue, they ended up looking foolish.”

Internal discord at elite institutions and bipartisan doubt about the sanctity of higher education was the outcome that Stefanik and her Republican colleagues wanted — but not because they’re any great defenders of Jews.

#Stefanik has echoed the antisemitic “great replacement” theory that Jews have pushed immigration and multiculturalism as a means of amassing political power over white Americans: In a 2021 campaign ad, she railed against what she characterized as Democrats’ plan to “overthrow our current electorate” by allowing undocumented immigrants to enter the country, leading to accusations of antisemitism.

  14. "The Campaign Against Antisemitism #CAA was formed in 2014, after a previous Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Its explicit founding purpose was to counter the antisemitism that arises in Britain when Israel pummels Palestinians and, implicitly, to defend Israel’s right to pummel. Chief executive Gideon Falter is also vice chairman of the Jewish National Fund #JNF UK, which is reported to have provided funding to the CAA in the past. The JNF enjoys charitable status and its existence predates the Balfour Declaration. For over a century, it has bought up land in historic Palestine, helped plan the Nakba, furthered exclusive Jewish settlement and transformed colonised land into parks and forests to erase what had been before."

  15. Memory Failure

Historical memory is too volatile to be fixed by political and cultural institutions; it always seemed implausible that a collective moral education could produce a stable, homogenous attitude across the generations. There are too many other factors determining what is remembered and what is forgotten, and the German national subconscious is burdened by a century of secrecy, crimes and cover-ups. Pankaj Mishra reviews two books on Germany and genocide.

  16. @nicholas_saunders Sorry for the misspelling.

Philosemitism is (largely, with exceptions) antisemitism presented in the form of pro-Jewish sentiment. The world is full of it. Much Christian "affection" for the Jewish people is soaked in it... and not in a good way.

  17. #Israel #Zionism #Palestine #Gaza #Philosemitism #Racism #Antisemitism: "In recent weeks, Western liberals and states have given overwhelming backing for Israel’s “right to defend itself.” This shrill support has barely wavered as Israel has methodically waged a scorched-earth campaign for over a month, destroying tens of thousands of homes, hospitals, schools, mosques, churches, and bakeries and subjecting Gaza’s Palestinian refugee population to an extraordinarily cruel collective punishment.

This latest installment of philozionism exposes more clearly than ever the ruthless double standard that underlies it: Israeli history and life are cherished; Muslim and Christian Palestinian history and life are fundamentally devalued.

This double standard has a long history. Protestant enthusiasts and theologians in Europe and North America embraced the idea of the “return” of the Jews to biblical Palestine, but had no interest in the actually existing, diverse population of contemporary Palestine. The Zionist movement itself largely ignored the native Palestinian population."

This "long read" from Michael Richmond in 2022 gives context for e.g. Tommy Robinson promoting the March Against Antisemitism.

"Gentile philosemites confidently took up positions seemingly speaking on behalf of “the Jewish community.” ...

"Solidarity and care are to be welcomed. But this is not that. Too often, philosemitism is characterised by appropriation and projection"

  20. @mousebot as BDS activist in Berlin, the sheer caucacity of Germans was more than I can bare and a major reason of why I left. Once a media art space invited me to be part of a discussion on BDS, and I was there up against these German guys from #antideutsche, calling me an antisemite, and im like hey you realize my family was literally held by your families in concentration camps, and they tried to write it off as an attempt to excuse antisemitism, and... my time in Berlin made me conclude that Germans have learned nothing from the #Holocaust, the have traded traditional antisemitism for a horrifying #philosemitism that allows them to use #Jews as an object of transference through which they can maintain their imperialist plunder through support for a modern settler colony in the Levant.
