Field work half-time for #BEN_EAF! ⛰️
We took small and larger soil samples from whom hashtag#SoilFauna will be heat-extracted in the soil lab at the Aberdeen campus of the #JamesHuttonInstitute. This is mainly springtails (#Collembola), mites (#Acari), and hopeful more small critters!
Further, we did also collect the soil fauna from the pitfall traps: mainly ground beetles (#Carabidae), wolf spiders (#Lycosidae), and harvestmen (#Phalangiidae). 🕷️🪲

#Arachtober 3: meet a representative of another order of arachnids, Opiliones (a.k.a. harvesters, harvestmen, daddy-long-legs [though this can also refer to a kind of spider, crane flies, and even a plant]). They have some key differences from spiders: head and abdomen segments fused together; no silk or venom (i.e. they are entirely harmless); only two eyes; and instead of using pedipalps to transfer sperm during mating, they have an intromittent (insertable) organ, a penis or aedeagus.
I think this is the common species _Phalangium opilio_, introduced from Europe. There are several thousand different species in this order!

#Arachtober 3: got a view of this opilionid's underside that let me see the chelate (clawed) ends of its chelicerae! Also note the way the prehensile end of its legs wraps around the plant stem (near some aphids, bonus).

I like how in the first picture you can see how the prehensile end of one of the male's legs is carefully curled around the female's abdomen, holding on with a tiny claw.

Visit by an #invasive #species on my windowsill in #Berlin: harvestman #Opilio #canestrinii (#Phalangiidae, #Opiliones). Although #globalwarming has recently made numerous invasive species native to #CentralEurope, some species were able to establish themselves already several decades ago, such as the opilionid presented here.
