David and Sam spent a few days at Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms a couple of weeks ago, guests of Rab and Pertex for their brand immersion week.
Material science. Sustainability. Forty years of kit history. Then up into the hills: Cairn Lochan, ice axe practice, and a Scottish wind that really meant it.
Good to know your gear from the inside out. 🏔️

A new by-law comes into effect as of tomorrow, banning #campfires and the use of disposable barbecues within the #Cairngorms National Park in #Scotland between April 1st and September 30th each year. Violations are subject to fines of up to £500.
This by-law comes in the wake of the UK’s largest #wildfire on record, which ripped through parts of the north east last year.

The woodlands of the Cairngorms have a very special feel to them. So, for this weekend's photo I thought I would share a view of them. They mix two of my favourite's woodland and heather.

I thought I would highlight the heather covered hills in the Cairngorms again for this weekend. It's such a beautiful place.

Heather and pine near #Braemar in the #Cairngorms , out for a walk with the family. Lovely!

I’ve been away hiking for the weekend with #Scouts. The perfect antidote to the bullshit that is being caused by the Cheeto Fuhrer (TM). 2 more Munros bagged, and a beautiful solstice whilst we were there. #GivePeaceAChance #scotland #myphoto #hillwalking #hike #iphonephotography #cairngorms

We recently enjoyed re-visiting our Linn of Quoich-The Punchbowl walk and have updated the guidance. A new higher path on the east side of the river, where erosion of the original riverbank bath made for very difficult walking, has transformed the accessibility of this wonderful short walk … 😀

Brown Cow Hill from Corgarff Castle in Aberdeenshire with Moray yesterday. Sounds an unimaginative name, until you remember that many of the Gaelic hill names – Black Hill, White Hill, Grey Hill, Red Hill, Big Hill, Small Hill – aren’t exactly inspiring.
We did have some wildlife encounters – a mountain hare very visible still in its winter coat, and a few red grouse – which were great to see.

Beautiful Glen Clova, which runs for some 18 miles north then north-west from Kirriemuir before finishing at Glendoll. It is the best known and most popular of the Angus Glens that cut into the southern flank of the Cairngorms. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/clova/clova/index.html

We passed a group of marksmen heading up the hill, and made sure they were happy with our intended route. Not recreational shooters who'd paid thousands for a day's "sport", but professional marksmen with serious kit out culling the deer.
Pic shows 3 of them following us up the hill.

Beinn Mholach from Drumochter yesterday, a bitterly cold wind but sheltered from the wind it was quite pleasant. Another Corbett for Moray and me.

Just above the Lecht ski centre, it was interesting to see an area of deliberately raising the water table to waterlog the peat, several different techniques are being used:1. Turf piled up on the downslope to create a pond.
2. A series of small turf dams to slow the flow.
3. Wooden boards used to create dams to slow the flow. And matting to protect the ground and retain vegetation.

Good weather has come back for a while, but still a cold wind. Headed up Càrn Mòr, a Corbett above the Lecht ski centre. The ski infrastructure is always grim, so avoided it and found a landrover track heading up from about a km beyond the ski centre.
Lots of boggy peat groughs, but easy walking higher up.

Keeping my CPD (Continuing Professional Development) up to date even though I've retired.
Stormy up high, so a day in and around Coire an t-Sneachda looking at upland plants: identification, edible berries, folklore, plus traditional uses for medicine, husbandry, dyeing, or making rope. It's always great seeing this familiar area from another point of view. And we finished with some juice and oatcakes with jams made from some of our berries. -
A sunny day sandwiched between two stormy days, so a quick couple of hours morning walk with Moray up Craigellachie, the Nature Reserve and hill behind Aviemore. A mixture of summer and autumn - heather and harebell still flowering, the bracken and rowan beries are well into autumn, but everything else is also beginning to turn now.

Hanging around the Cairngorms this morning, look who we found hanging about too:
-
A day out back in my old office with Moray. Our old office, because Moray usually came to work with me.
Hot hazy sunshine above an inversion. Lurcher's Crag and the Northern Corries to Cairn Gorm. I used to be up here several times a week, now love just wandering without any particular objectives.

Just finished a stroll in the Caledonian Forests of Rothiemurchus, emerged to find it raining that peculiar thick yet soft rain so bright in the sun... it could only mean one thing.
From the roadside the rainbow was mostly hidden behind trees, so I sent the droneybird up... Beautiful.#drone #photography #caledonianforest #scotland #rainbow #panorama #naturephotography #cairngorms

#FinishedReading this remarkable nature writing by #NanShepherd about her walks in the #Cairngorms in Scotland. In the 40s, well before anyone was talking about mindfulness, this book is an ode to minute observation both of the world around you and of its effect on your senses and body. There is a whole chapter on the feeling of falling asleep and waking on a mountain. Read the perceptive foreword by #RobertMacfarlane and avoid the facile afterword by Jeanette Winterson! #Bookstodon @bookstodon

I realised recently that there are 9 Munros from Moray's round where he didn’t get a pic taken, so looks like we have a project for the rest of this summer.
First up, Meall Chuaich, a straightforward hill less than half an hour down the road, which we went for today. I also realised that the three Munros next to the A9 above Dalwhinnie, including this one, are the only Munros in the area that I never went up with clients.

Corgarff Castle, in a wild and lonely setting at the head of Strathdon, on the flank of the Cairngorms and guarding the quickest route from Deeside to Speyside. The castle was built in about 1550 and has an outer wall added in 1748. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/strathdon/corgarffcastle/index.html
