Some early screenshots of my all-new #PDXTransit for #macOS using mostly #SwiftUI and some #AppKit. 🤓🚌🚏
-
Oh, and I am really liking the way my little slide-out options bar is turning out! :) Far less intrusive than a modal view!
-
Just submitted #PDXTransit with Live Activities support to App Store Review! :)
Before this, I relied on a similar feature that does 3 or 5-minute local push notifications for your arrival.
-
My #PDXTransit Live Activities for watchOS show up in CarPlay. :)
-
Made a short recording of how Live Activities for #PDXTransit work. 😊
For any transit stop, long press on an arrival and choose the Live Activity option.
You can open back up to this view by tapping the Live Activity from the lock screen or Dynamic Island.
It’ll also highlight the arrival you’re interested in as well. 🚍
-
I’m excited about how these Live Activities are turning out!
-
And of course I’ve updated the various views on iPhone as well today. 😊
-
Today I got the Smart Stack Live Activity done for #PDXTransit. 😄
-
A bit more on using Dynamic Island and Live Activities in #PDXTransit.
Man, you're so limited in space when it comes to all the available areas/space around the Dynamic Island.
Still working through it but here's an initial look at it.
In the Dynamic Island, I only show the base transit line name & circular progress bar until arrival, long press reveals more detail, and the full view is in the lock screen.
-
I'm implementing Live Activities for #PDXTransit. It's a bit basic since I am not using remote push notifications but kinda neat anyway!
I also made themes depending on if you're tracking a TriMet line or a Portland Streetcar line.🚍
-
Oh, and fun fact about #PDXTransit for #macOS, the map pin is a little replica of what actual #TriMet bus stops look like in Portland... The idea came from @louie and he is also the one who made these for me to add to my app, so thank you Louie! :) Aren't they cute?!
-
Oh sorry, one more... here's a cool one showing Touch Bar support for MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Haha The #TriMet logo on the Touch Bar did look pretty darn cute! :D
-
And next, macOS Sonoma and macOS Sequoia. Sequoia didn't get much but Sonoma's update adopted the new full-height "Inspector" sidebar introduced in AppKit.
It's finally starting to look more modern, isn't it? :)

For the macOS Ventura era, I added a right-sidebar with additional details. It was pretty cool and it set me up for what Apple introduced as the Inspector Sidebar the following year!!!
Notice how the right-sidebar doesn't go to the top of the window...

Up next, the macOS Big Sur and Monterey era... Still, ewww. What was I thinking!?

For fun, here are some #PDXTransit screenshots from the Yosemite-era of #macOS. Don't judge too harshly... this was so ugly lol. What was I thinking?! #AppKit
Or do judge harshly. IDC. Lordy knows I DO! LOL
I love the OG Mac OS X Pinstripes so much I added them to this app lol!!!

I think this will end up being what I release as the #LiquidGlass version of #PDXTransit for #macOS.
-
Also, in other news, I finally finished the webpage for all-new, next-gen #PDXTransit for iOS/watchOS too. This new version is 100% SwiftUI and uses newer frameworks like SwiftData (with iCloud sync), App Shortcuts, Widgets, etc. etc. It's a bit simple but that's okay. I spend too much time on this app already haha -- plus it is completely free!
(I *detest* making webpages & I suck at it)

Some of my favorite features implemented in the new #PDXTransit.
• Maps Look Around when looking at arrival times
• Using iOS on-device ML to translate TriMet service alerts to a specified supported language
• Setting 3 or 5-min from arrival times Notification remindersThe new #PDXTransit is available now and it’s free!

This is getting crazy!
When SwiftUI 1.0 came out, I knew I wanted to re-do #PDXTransit completely with 100% SwiftUI. Because of missing features, inconsistent behavior, subpar app experience, or just redoing major frameworks (like navigation), I ended up rearchitecting the UI over and over.
SwiftUI has stabilized somewhat now and this app is now ready to ship.
But almost there! I need to gather screenshots and make marketing bullshit text lol.

PDX Transit v.SwiftUI is DONE. :)
I need submit for review while I start winding down the UIKit version that was first released 10 years ago (Aug. 2015).
I hope this version carries me another 10 years.
This version was 5+ years in the making. Trying/Starting Over/Re-doing major parts as older SwiftUI APIs were being deprecated. Phew... SwiftUI has matured A LOT since 1.0 but has way more to go.
-
When the new PDX Transit is out, whenever you bookmark a transit stop, it’ll make App Shortcuts which you can add to your Home Screen.
They can be used to get arrival times or view related service alerts for that stop. Check it out:

And here are some screenshots of the Widgets and App Shortcuts available in the new PDX Transit.
Widgets provide shortcuts to your bookmarked transit stops or major parts of the app while the App Shortcuts provide arrival times and alerts for bookmarked transit stops.
-
Anyone in the Portland area who uses #TriMet care to Test Flight my app? It’s a re-write of the currently shipping version of PDX Transit however it is now 100% SwiftUI and uses Swift Data and Swift Concurrency — includes App Shortcuts, Widgets, & a SwiftUI version of PDX Transit for Apple Watch. Also has fun things like on device translations for service alerts and look around in Maps. Unlike the previous version, it has an iPad optimized layout too.

I had to get ✨ CREATIVE ✨ on getting the sub sequence of transit stops for a Leg from when you’re supposed to board and then exit.
-
These iPad Lockscreen #WidgetKit widgets for PDX Transit have been fun to build too! :) There are two: one with shortcuts to the app and another showing your top 4 bookmarks.
Wallpaper from @BasicAppleGuy which is also the default wallpaper included in the original iPad with Retina display.
-
I ended up adding the large size widget for the single transit stop widget which links you to its service alerts in the app. I’m happy with these. 😊

I learned a lot about using #WidgetKit these past 8 days. I created two types of Widgets for #PDXTransit based on the bookmarks you save in the app 😊 Still tweaking the UI though but you get the idea.
-
Still tinkering with the styling of my #WidgetKit widget for #PDXTransit.
-
Not quite done yet but this Widget with your bookmarked transit stops for #Trimet is feeling more and more real! It works too! 🤓

Now that I have #AppShortcuts complete for #PDXTransit, I’m getting into Widgets with #WidgetKit. 🤓

My app, #PDXTransit, turns 10 years old this year this August. I wrote it when I moved to Portland back in 2015.
Well, this year for its 10th birthday, I plan to release a complete re-write using the latest technologies from Apple including an iPad-specific user experience.
Here's a sneak peek at what I've been working on the past few years with #SwiftUI, #SwiftConcurrency, and #SwiftData!!!
(and of course it comes with a re-write of its companion app for Apple Watch!)

I'm having way too much fun with this new UI for my Arrival Times view and some animation. #pdxtransit #swiftui #coreanimation

I finally found a reason to use my scrolling marquee that I made for Music Widget, QuickTune, etc. etc. for an iOS app...
My PDX Transit SwiftUI re-write!!! Check it out:
(still a work in progress but you get the idea!)
