Corfe is old English for gap, here in the hills which define and obstruct access to an area called the Isle of Purbeck.
Norman invaders replaced earlier Saxon and I dare say much earlier fortification with a motte and bailey castle, strong and on a hill.It figures in the #SciFi novel #Pavane by #KeithRoberts which is well worth reading.
