  2. I had the chance to play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King this weekend. It blends a couple of aspects of prior Pandemic titles: the dice-based combat of Fall of Rome and the spawn mechanics of Reign of Cthulhu, replacing the cultists with ghouls and shoggoths with abominations. The typical "five cards of a color" mechanic is replaced with quests: roll the dice to advance on a quest track, while players at the quest location can reveal cards matching icons on the quest track to move additional spaces. Players have health that can be reduced from combat or questing. Player cards grant one-time use abilities and icons for quests instead of depicting locations. Players must complete three quests before taking on the Lich King at the citadel, which is a fourth, longer quest track.

In all, I found myself enjoying this one. It's not my favorite Pandemic, but I think it's more engaging than Reign of Cthulhu. Quests provide an interesting alternative to the usual "cure" mechanic, and I like cards not being locations but buffs or abilities.

  3. It’s here! #Daybreak is the new #boardgame from one of my favourite designers, @mleacock of #PandemicGame fame, this time collaborating with #seriousgames designer Matteo Menapace (@baddeo) on a co-op game about tackling climate change.

The game walks the walk, too - a lot of effort went into making it a sustainable production, and entirely recyclable. There’s no plastic, not even shrink wrap!

Can’t wait to try it out.

  4. One cube away from eradicating all four diseases before we ran out of cards! So close! #PandemicGame

  5. CW: Pandemic (the board game)

I don't know if this is a banal observation to board game aficionados, but I think the "Intensify" mechanic in Pandemic, where you take the infection card discard pile and re-add it to the top of the draw pile to simulate the intensification of the viruses at previously infected locations, is really clever.
