  15. Did you know that the Paiwan people living in the south got their third gender term?

    "Adju", originally meaning a sister or friend, is a term for multi-gendered Paiwanese (although it is said the term was also adopted by other indigenous groups of Taiwan and even the non-indy folk!)

    The term is used for feminine and gay men, although some sources like Wikipedia* state it is more akin to a heterosexual trans woman by the Western understanding of gender.

    The Adju play an important role during various ceremonies in the tribe - such as singing or guarding the heavenly charm left by their ancestors.
