🚨 ALERT: Linguistic diversity is in "peril" because of those dastardly large language models! 😱 Apparently, as AI languages "expand," human languages are doomed to extinction. Quick, everyone, uninstall your AI overlords before they gobble up your dialect! 🗣️💥

Ah yes, the linguistic hipsters of the Mexican jungle 🌿 dust off their ancient scrolls 🧾 and surprise! They're speaking languages older than your grandma's fruitcake recipe 🥴. Meanwhile, the rest of the world continues to butcher Spanish after their third margarita 🍹.

Since the 1980s, scholarly journals have increasingly denationalized & anglicized their titles to boost international visibility. This trend aligns with indexing policies of Web of Science & Scopus, favouring English-language journals.

After authoring several #research articles on #LinguisticDiversity over the past few years, I finally got a #PeerReview request for a manuscript on that topic a month ago, and I was finally able to submit my review on it.
Unlike other manuscripts I've reviewed this year, this one was well-written, thought-out, and a highly interesting read. It provided me with great new references, new researchers to follow, and reinforced my thoughts on what I want to do in the future.

Wonderful to see some mapping of languages on the urban scale to be done in #London, and apparently the author has written a book on similar things done in #NewYork as well.
Now I am really aching for my project proposal to be accepted, in which I would be mapping high-resolution #multilingualism and #diversity across Finland. I would love to continue this work as the field seems to be picking up some speed!

I have recently discovered “In Taiwan We Speak”, a new radio series on #RadioTaiwanInternational’s English language service, covering the #LinguisticDiversity of #Taiwan.
The first featured language (in Episodes 2 and 3) is #Paiwan, a #Formosan language spoken by some 15,000 #indigenous people.

We focused on two population groups that emerged in the 1990s, Somalis & Estonians, to understand how people with different cultural backgrounds and migration contexts are exposed to #LinguisticDiversity in their residential neighbourhoods.
We found that linguistic diversity has consistently increased in the HMA during the last 30 years. #Somali and #Estonian speakers live in more linguistically diverse neighbourhoods compared to #Finnish and #Swedish speakers, but the differences are reducing.

A language that doesn't adapt to modern reality will fade... Great to see OPAB/OPLB creating a conversation around terms associated with aerial innovation such as quadrocopter in #Brezhoneg: https://www.brezhoneg.bzh/TPL_CODE/TPL_ENTREEPARTICIPATIVE/PAR_TPL_IDENTIFIANT/245/89-forom-termenadurezh.htm. 🚁🖤🤍🖤

More gratuitously shitty behavior from the Turkish government. Also, worth reading and thinking about in light of the current discussion about language and exclusion on this platform.
===
The exclusion of Kurdish from the E-Reçetem system is not an isolated incident but part of a broader issue concerning language rights in Turkey. According to a bulletin by Minority Rights Group Europe, Kurds and other minorities in Turkey “struggle to prove their existence” and have no right to mother-tongue education in schools. Where rare opportunities do exist, parents often avoid enrolling their children in elective courses for minority languages due to societal stigma.

These sections from an article about Environmental Linguistics by K. David Harrison deeply resonate with me and also how I think about (but often can't articulate) the landscape & thought patterns in #ThingUmbrella:

(via @Slavin)Languages are gateways to unique worlds & ways of expression. Especially for coding, I've been mainly attracted by langs offering vastly different POVs (and rabbit holes) than those I already knew, forcing me to unlearn in order to learn anew. Also think the computational arts/design world at large would benefit from actively creating/exploring more of these... #LinguisticDiversity

@digigeolab I know it ain't much to look at, but I actually am rather proud of this one. I've been writing how the focal point of #LinguisticDiversity has been gradually moving to the northeast and this map confirms it. Much more will be forthcoming in an upcoming manuscript, y'all just have to wait for me to actually finish it.
I suspect the centroid movement would be more radical if I had used population weighted diversity as the centroid weighting scheme instead.
