William Gibsonin Neurovelho on cyberpunkin klassikko, jossa ihmisten ja koneiden, todellisuuden ja virtuaalitodellisuuden rajat hämärtyvät. Yksi Matrix-elokuvan inspiraatiosta, mikä on hyvin selvästi nähtävissä.

Jacqueline Hatpman's novel I Who Have Never Known Men was tells the story of a young woman has lived large portion of her life locked in an underground cage with 39 other women. They don't know how they got there, or why they are imprisoned, but one day they all escape to the strange world outside.
This was excellent and very thought provoking. Much about what makes us human, but offers no clear answers. Absolutely one of the best books I've ever read, warmly recommended. -

Oikein mainio. -
What happens when greedy puritan men decide to use their religion and power against the wrong woman to get her land? If you enjoy stories about revenge and female rage, nature spirits and witchcraft, then I would recommend Brom's novel Slewfoot. Absolutely infuriating at parts, but oh so satisfying. The art is gorgeous and captivating, and I thoroughly enjoyed this wild ride.

I don't read much romance, but Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher really worked for me. It tells the tale of Stephen, a paladin whose god is dead, and Grace, a perfumer unwillingly entangled in a plot including poisons and assassins. I loved the main couple, and T. Kingfisher's humour and talent to add quirky bits of horror into her stories made this a very enjoyable read. Will definitely continue with this series.

Kid got Heartstooper for Yule and of course I had to read it. It's a YA #GraphicNovel that tells the story of how two teenage boys meet at school, become friends, and more.
So cute I cried 😭🥰. 4 ⭐, now I just need to wait until kid has read the second part so I can continue, too. -
Klassikkokirjailijoiden parhaat kummitustarinat on 18 lyhyen kertomuksen kokoelma. Odotusten mukaisesti kaikki eivät olleet yhtä mieluisia, mutta yleisesti ottaen tykkäsin. Kovin pelottavia eivät minusta olleet, osa oli jopa huvittavia, jotkut makuuni turhan epämääräisiä, mutta kaikki kuitenkin omalla tavallaan mielenkiintoisia, ikkuna menneisyyden ihmisten pelkoihin ja ajatuksiin. 3,5 ⭐

Ihan kelpo tarina, erityisesti tunnelmalliset kuvaukset kylmästä, talvisesta saaresta. -
The first book of 2025 turned out to be The Deep by Rivers Solomon. It tells the story of Yetu, who is the historian of her ppl, the descendants of African women thrown overboard from slave ships. Holding the memories of all of their ancestors is hard on Yetu, so she flees in hope of finding some peace.
A powerful story, though the execution didn't fully work for me. Would still recommend, because the book is well written and explores interesting themes. 3,5 ⭐ -
#OutiLukee 2024:
📖 107 kirjaa, 31 522 sivua
📖 Eniten luin heinäkuussa (5000 sivua ja 25 kirjaa), koska ahmaisin yhden manga-sarjan
📖 Eniten luetuksi genreksi nousi yllättäen kauhu, aiemmin olen lukenut sitä hyvin vähän. Seuraaviksi ylsivät tutut fantasia ja mysteerit, klassikoita sen sijaan tuli luettua reilusti aiempaa vähemmän
📖 Pisin kirja: Monte-Criston kreivi, keskimäärin pituus oli noin 280 sivua
📖 Tutustuin 52 minulle uuden kirjailijan teoksiin
📖 93 % oli fiktiota -
Last book of the year turned out to be Kiersten White's novel Lucy Undying. Loved this queer retelling of Lucy Westenra's fate after meeting Dracula. Solid writing, loved the new twists and takes of the classic characters and very much enjoyed Iris, too. Unexpected modern connections, which made the story interesting.
4 ⭐, for those who, like the author, think Lucy deserved a girlfriend. -
The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher is perhaps the creepiest of her #horror books I have read so far. It tells what happens when Mouse goes to clean up the house of her very unpleasant (luckily dead) grandma with hoarding tendencies. She finds a notebook with confusing ramblings about "the twisted ones" that apparently inhabit the surrounding forest.
A sinister & dark modern fairytale, 3.75 ⭐ Read alone in a cabin in the autumn for maximum spook. -
Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea is a beautifully written story about Zachary, a student who stumbles upon a mysterious book and later a door leading to a hidden, underground library. A whimsical fairytale, gorgeous writing, interesting characters, just a bit of romance. 4.75 ⭐ Definitely read if you liked The Night Circus, but if you didn't, this probably isn't your kind of book.

Myytillisiä tarinoita (toim. Lauri Simonsuuri) on suuri kokoelma lyhyitä kansanperinteenä kulkeneita tarinoita kummituksista, hiisistä, enteistä yms. 3,5 ⭐

Auralee Wallace's book When the Crow's Away is a cozy witchy mystery. Brynn is a witch with the ability to communicate with ghosts, and is contacted by the recently deceased Mort. Unlike the coroner, Mort is convinced he's been murdered, and wants Brynn to catch the killer.
This was a fun and entertaining read. Solid writing and plot, enjoyable characters. It's the 2nd part in a series, though reading the 1st isn't absolutely necessary. 4 ⭐ -
T. Kingfisher's new novel A Sorceress Comes to Call is a dark retelling of Goose Girl. It tells the tale of a young girl, Cordelia, and what happens when her ... unusual mother decides to marry a wealthy squire. The story is a delightful combination of sinister plotting, magic, a bit of Regency romance, some horror, all topped with the guaranteed T. Kingfisher humour and interesting characters. Very enjoyable read 4 ⭐.

Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher is a nice retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I really like her humour, writing style and the twisty take on this classic tale. Short and quick read, a nice literary snack. 4 ⭐

S. T. Gibson's book An Education in Malice is a retelling of Carmilla. Personally I liked this more than the original, very much enjoyed the dark academy vibes, the relationship between the main characters and especially the ending. Would recommend checking this out if you're looking for stories about sapphic vampires. 3,5 ⭐

Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami is somewhat strange, but sweet story about a middle aged woman meeting her old high school teacher and how their lives come together. A collection of little vignettes, somewhat dreamy, beautiful language. 4 ⭐

Alix E. Harrow's Starling House was a delightful read. It tells the story of Opal, who takes a job in a weird, creepy house to support her kid brother. The house seems to have a mind of its own, and uncanny and sinister happenings seem to be connected to it.
Beautiful writing, great atmosphere, loved the story. Very much enjoyed how the main characters were described as ordinary looking instead of having exotic eye colours etc. 5 ⭐ -
Loppuratkaisu tuli hiukan liian helposti, muuten oiva teos 3.75 ⭐. Suosittelen erityisesti noin 12-15-vuotiaille ja joulun aikaan luettavaksi.

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher tells the story of Kara, who moves to her uncle's house / museum of curiosities and discovers a portal to another world inside one of the walls. A world of willows and something that can hear your thoughts.
As usual, loved the writing style and humour. The story was solid, but didn't grab me the way some of her other books have done. Creepy but not too scary for me, very enjoyable. 3,5 ⭐ -

Seanan McGuire's Middlegame is a story about twins Roger, the master of words, and Dodger, the master of numbers. But unlike they think, they're not exactly human. This adult fantasy weaved together alchemy, time manipulation and quantum entanglement in a way that really worked for me. Well written, good character work, things explained enough to make sense but not so much that there isn't any mystery left. 4 ⭐, enjoyed more than Wayward children series (which I do like).

Olen testaillut minulle uusia pohjoismaisia dekkarikirjailijoita.

Madeline Miller's Circe is a retelling of the Greek myths surrounding Circe, the daughter of Helios and Perse, immortal but not appreciated by her family. After practicing witchcraft, she ends up exiled on the island of Aiaia, where she meets various legendary characters, both mortal and divine.
Beautifully written, loved the story. I was only vaguely familiar with Circe before, so I had pretty much no idea what was going to happen. Amazing ending, 5 ⭐.

Elatsoe was a really interesting read. It's a #YA urban fantasy, and tells about Elatsoe, a Lipan Apache girl who gets a message from her murdered cousin telling she needs to protect his family. A well written, compelling story and the #indigenous aspect gives it a distinct flavor I have not encountered before. I also enjoyed the lack of angsty teenage romance (main character is #ace ). 4⭐, will definitely read more from Darcie Little Badger.
