I did a bunch of research yesterday on older AMD Opteron server CPUs. My conclusion is that I won't go out of my way to buy any of them, but would be happy to play around with one if I got it in a haul of retired equipment.
An Opteron that is AM3 socket compatible is of interest as I have a number of good AM3 motherboards that I am not currently using.
For practical purposes, the older Intel socket 1155 and 1150 CPUs and motherboards are more useful as I already have many of them and getting more is easy and inexpensive.
