So here is the solution:

It's a #SIEMENS SIMATIC Field PG M

A rugged/hardened industrial-grade notebook from 2006. It has a full magnesium chassis (yes, the whole chassis, not just the inner frame) with rubber bumpers on each corner and all ports covered for dust protection. It does not need a carrying case - it is its own carrying case. 😅

CPU is a #Pentium M running at 2 GHz. I upgraded the RAM to the 2 GB maximum and installed a 120 GB SSD.

Since Windows XP Embedded, which it came with, is pretty useless these days and has no nostalgic value, I installed Linux Mint (LMDE 6) on it, which runs great. So this is still useful, especially since it has so many legacy i/o (floppy, cd/dvd burner, sd card reader, pcmcia, parallel, serial, usb, lan, wlan, and modem).

Best of all: the battery still charges and runs the notebook for 2 hours on a charge!

And the Pentium Pro is 686, then the proper name of the Pentium 2 is actually the Hexium 2, as it's the second 686 chip!

Pentium 4 was netburst, so it would be the Heptium 1.

Initially the only I/O will be a serial port or two, but I'll add an interface for an SD card if I can get as far as booting from flash into a monitor.
Has anyone written an open-source x86 (386 or newer) 32-bit protected mode boot/debug monitor for bare metal?
There won't be any secret motherboard/BIOS vendor binary blob code doing sneaky stuff in System Management Mode, and they didn't have the secret Management Engine (ME) crap back then either.

Hey fellow nerds, do you know if I can just swap a Pentium 133 with a Pentium 166 MMX without having to change the VRM on the motherboard? Based on the following table, I’m not so sure: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_(original)#Models_and_variants.

EDIT: After doing some digging and trying to remember what I found when I last looked at that question, I came to the conclusion that no, it’s actually not possible. So’ll be looking for a replacement VRM module as well.

#thinclient Dell OptiPlex 3000 TC mit #pentium Silver-Prozessor. 16 GByte RAM und 64 GByte eMMC, integriert. Steckplatz für weitere #ssd vorhanden. Preislich erschwinglich.
Leider mit unpassendem Netzteil geliefert (zu dicker Stecker), aber Ersatz ist auf dem Weg.

Rewatching these NYPD Blue eps has triggered other memories from that time. When season 1 was happening I had gotten a small cash influx from my grandparents, so I ordered a ZEOS Pentium 90 (complete with FDIV bug, and don't ask me how much it cost!).

The rep from ZEOS was really cool and it turned out she was a huge NYPD Blue fan also, so we would talk about the show.

I always wondered what happened to that woman. We had such fun talking on the phone.

I just spent half a day restoring my old IBM PC 330 to a working state. It features an Intel Pentium 166MHz with 16MB of SDRAM and an 8GB IDE harddisk drive. There's also a networking card, as well as a Soundblaster 16.

As much as I appreciate its compact design, it's a real pain to assemble! Oh, well.. looks like everything's working again. Hurray! 😀

Eight hours into my #NetBSD adventure and I have just had to read the kernel source code. Yay! The bit I looked at was distressingly clean and even had *comments*. Eeuuww!

Also, it is still building all the software I need. That's not the OS's fault, I didn't expect an emulated #Pentium to be speedy.
