  1. For about 4 years I’ve had a saved search in the local classifieds app for a Sun Ultra 27 and today I was out and about and got an alert one was for sale. My jaw dropped when I saw it was in perfect condition and about 10 mins away from home. I bought it instantly! I’ll get it as soon as I’m back in Copenhagen! So excited!
    Since my Ultra 24 already got modern guts, maybe I’ll leave this one stock and it can be a retro workstation.

  2. Solaris 10 was a total revelation back in the day. Kids these days will never witness something like that.

    Cynicism has killed most of genuine curiosity.

  3. Congratulations, you have reached #suntember ! Get out your #sparc machines and show some fun things they can do! 🥳

  4. Finally ran "poweroff" on my trusty old #ultrasparc #server 🥰
    It did good for almost 20 years with #linux. Probably would have run for a while longer but the IDE system disk started to fail. All the important stuff was a on separate raid that got migrated to a boring x86 VM.
    But now I can experiment with it a bit more as it's not in any production use anymore.
    Had to wait for October. It just felt wrong to do it under #suntember

  5. Happy 69th birthday to Andy Bechtolsheim, founder of #SunMicrosystems, and driving the start of art of hardware, and now especially networking, for nearly 50 years! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Bec #Suntember ends

  8. OTD 1994: *SunExpress to put Catalog on Internet* #SunMicrosystems #Suntember
    ```
    SunExpress, Inc., the direct marketing subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., announced at UNIX Expo that it will put its comprehensive catalog on the Internet. For the first time, Internet users will be allowed immediate access through the World-Wide Web to the industry's most complete information resource on SPARC, Solaris and Sun-ready aftermarket products for enterprise computing.
    Sun DE, and big reason I landed there, Erik Nordmark, came up with what I call "Nordmark's Law" because of this mess.
    -- Any packet transformations that happen after a {route,interface} is selected could be done by any arbitrary point in the network. --
    It's why bump-in-the-stack implementations are awful.
    SKIP was awful for a number of reasons. The lack of PFS was just the cherry on top, and the easy way to sell it to security-conscious folks. Even Diffie told me later he made a mistake in thinking SKIP was good.
    Trust me, I had to internally-fight to get IPsec into #Solaris as a first-class citizen (and SKIPs implementation was more than half of its problem... Solaris folks would've trashed it were it in Solaris Engineering).
  11. 1994: #SunMicrosystems develops SKIP - Simple Key Management for Internet Protocols. SKIP lost out to IPSec in the IETF because (IIRC) it didn't have Perfect Forward Secrecy. A clear case of "perfect" being the enemy of "good" - it took many more years before IPSec had usable key management (or does it yet?). docs.oracle.com/cd/E19957-01/8 #Suntember
  18. System drive (good old IDE!) started to get cranky in my Netra AX1105-500 #UltraSparc IIe so it was time to migrate services to a boring x86 VM.
    It had taken care of my email needs since 2006, so pretty much 24/7 💪 little #sparc now have a nice retirement.
  24. But my #SPARCclassic did start, but Linux barfed on the empty nvram.
    Oh, and if the person designing that abomination reads this, a collective "fuck you" from all retro sun hardware users.
  25. My first own #sparc #sun4c a SPARCstation IPC
    Not that surprisingly, it didn't start anymore, PSU seems to be dead.
  26. Wouldn't it be fun if someone would remake a #Sun2 or #Sun3 with modern components as people seem to do of just about every toy system these days.
    Even the schemas and PAL code is out there, afaik, so should be fairly easy ? Or ?
  27. Ran across this going through my old stuff. The pre-pre-pre-release docs for the SPARCstation-2 (Calvin). Was given to us lowly techs who were destined to debug them coming off the manufacturing line. When I started at Sun, I was a lowly failure analysis technician, the good jobs went to Stanford grads, DeVRY grads needed to come in through the back door. Eventually made my way into engineering and then SunLabs (where the real party was).
  32. Sun 2/120 booting SunOS 3.0
    This is from 2004 when I got the machine. Cost me 2€, delivered.
  33. Fun fact, I've run a 650Mhz #ultrasparc pretty much 24/7 since about 2006. It is waiting for retirement as soon as I get time to move everything. Like that will ever happen 🙄
