Saw this fascinating deep-dive on the #OneLaptopPerChild story. I remember wanting one back then because, honestly, the whole idea felt even crazier than it does now that we've got all kinds of tech even cheaply. Hadn’t really considered how much it shaped the market (hello 👋 #netbooks #chromebooks). It popped back into my head because something, let's say, "related" should arrive tomorrow, and if it does I̶ ̶m̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶d̶o̶ ̶a̶ ̶p̶o̶s̶t̶ ̶a̶b̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶i̶t̶.̶
L̶e̶t̶'̶s̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶…̶ (boring post 😅) -

I remember volunteering with #OneLaptopPerChild #OLPC and the effort to figure out and work with Wikipedia on how to get a downloadable copy of Wikipedia (or at least some of it) that could go on the little green laptops that might not have regular access to the Internet out in remote areas.

I know Ramy from the #OneLaptopPerChild community. He told me he has a multimedia degree from Palestine University and 10 years of experience in electronics, medical equipment, electric/hybrid cars and electric bikes, maintenance and design of electronic devices, and solar energy, CNC & 3d printing, and PC maintenance/programming. He is willing to test to show his expertise in any of these subjects. Can you help connect him with anyone that can help? 2/

Just to add to that, between #onelaptopperchild and #ai , plus my favorite, #khanacademy , and #StackOverflow , those constitute a sort of library. Certainly could rival many public schools.
Let's not get caught up in the bricks and mortar.
Myself, I'm a #kindle fanatic and find #eink to be a technology with transformative potential.
More #reading I say. Personally, I cannot stand reading on a regular screen.

Is an #OLPC #OneLaptopPerChild original "XO" considered #RetroComputing yet? Still useful to someone?

Anyone remembers the #OLPCXO? The device from from the #OneLaptopPerChild tech project disguised as #humanitarian?
Spotted one “in the wild”, last week. It was running Ubuntu instead of Sugar. And its use had little to do with the original purpose of the “$100 laptop for children in the developing world”.
To this day, the whole project is a reminder of the dangers of #Technosolutionism and the perils of #NarrowThinking, despite #Papert and #constructionism

Further luckily, #onelaptopperchild was prohibited, from being junked, or stored uncared for – often considered outdated (or otherwise not worth to use anymore) – until they acctually are. 🌱 🌱 🌱
