People really, REALLY need to develop a powerful critique of AI and its extremely serious consequences. I even know people in international solidarity NGOs who naively believe that AI can be “responsible”—yet another oxymoron of the capitalist system.

“99th Day is essential reading for anyone who cares about our planet. Prepare to be disturbed, enlightened and inspired.” – Justine McCarthy, The Irish Times
And, if you’re in Ireland, Gerry has a book tour in February. If I’m in the country, I’ll be at the Dublin event on the 9th. Hope to see some of you there :)

I wake up to more emails advertising university jobs, but not lecturers (or senior lecturers). No, these grade 6/7 salaries are for 'study advisors' or god forbid 'success partners'. As if Capita replaced Faculty, unis can now can look forward to being success managed, student to staff to redundancy. And its all decided with the big data imaginary.

Book review: Technocolonialism by Mirca Madianou
Mirca Madianou’s Technocolonialism shows how six logics of digital humanitarianism – humanitarian accountability, audit, capitalism, technosolutionism, securitization and resistance – together combine to reproduce colonial practices of extraction, paternalisation, marginalisation and disempowerment through digital solutions.
Using examples from fieldwork in multiple geographies, Madianou first provides a brief history lesson on the logics of colonialism, demonstrating its far-reaching […]

"We have felt it necessary to dwell so long on an analysis of technology here because we have found that technological optimism is the most common and the most dangerous reaction to our findings from the world model. [...] Faith in technology as the ultimate solution to all problems can thus divert our attention from the most fundamental problem-the problem of growth in a finite system and prevent us from taking effective action to solve it."

Whatever happened to all the #blockchain projects? Not the outright cryptoswindle type but all these ambitious and noble ideas to generate trust and accountability in #supplychain etc.
Maybe if people spent some time doing hype postmortems, the next hype wave would be less embarrassing? Building a sort of immunity against naive #technosolutionism
The cumulating decades of wasted tech potential may become something we'll deeply regret as the real problems we are facing keep pilling up.

A major reason why #technosolutionism is a caricature and not part of an actual solution toolkit is that many strands of technology are abstracted away to serve the same old social purposes. It does not matter if its a mace, a sword, a gun, a jet or a flying saucer if the objective is always the same.
But "social tech", from taboos to religions, politics, laws and financial systems are immensely powerful as they change objectives: the same physical reality organized in different ways.

Right now I am not arguing against #AI as a corporate tool, as an unsustainable, power-hungry privacy nightmare.
There are ways to train it locally and host on more sustainable infrastructure.
I am arguing against the very basic #technosolutionism of AI, which is the anti-thesis of #solarpunk :
Trying to solve each problem with an app which you do NOT understand, which you do NOT analyze, which can lead to terrible consequences down the road.

@canadaduane #solarpunk is about understanding the human context of a problem before attempting a technical solution for it.
#vibeCoding is the exact opposite of that, throwing mindless #AI copy-pasta at a prompt until something executable is made.
We need to get away from #technoSolutionism , not make it easier to drown in it!

#AI #GenerativeAI #AIHype #AIBubble #TechnoSolutionism: "There’s irony in the rather breathless way Blair evangelises about AI. When he was prime minister, the late Paddy Ashdown showed him email for the first time. “It will never catch on, Paddy,” he said. Blair told one of his sons, who works in the tech sector, that he had agreed to speak at a symposium on cryptocurrency. “What should I tell them?” he asked. Came the reply: “Tell them you’re sick.” In the book, he remarks that he does not have a “scientific mind” and confesses to “huge gaps” in his understanding of technology.
I suggest he’s been bedazzled by the self-interested boosterism of the tech companies with their claims that AI is the future of everything. He leans towards me to argue back: “You bring together 25 of the top companies in the UK and say ‘how important is the technology revolution to you?’ And each one of them will tell you it’s vastly important.”
“If it were mere hype, I don’t think you’d find the top companies in China to be technology companies. I don’t think you’d find the emerging ones in India to be technology companies. OK, there’s always a risk of over-hyping, but I would say the bigger risk now is under-hyping.”" https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/sep/01/tony-blair-on-leadership-book-interview-starmer-ai-trump

#STS #PhilTech #AI #SustainableAI #TechnoSolutionism #ClimateChange #Environment: "Contrary to its perceived role as a solution, I argue that sustainable AI inadvertently perpetuates and reinforces existing structures of socio-economic exploitation and exclusion. Building on critical technology and AI studies as well as materialist thinking, I shed light on the hegemonic narratives, visions, and beliefs that ground the technological horizon of this conception. Thus adding to a critical theory of technology, the central aim of this paper is to “demystify the illusion of technical necessity” with which sustainable AI is presented and “expose the relativity of the prevailing technical choices”. The pursuit of sustainable AI is not driven by benevolent intentions for resource-friendly and ethical solutions but represents a contingent choice that emerges as the technological manifestation of the current socio-economic horizon.
Laying out this argument, the paper proceeds as follows. First, I survey the concept of sustainable AI. Second, I demystify the narratives, visions, and beliefs behind the concept by sketching three epistemological dimensions to analyze AI: AI-as-technology, AI-beyond-technology, and AI-as-ideology. Grounded in science and technology studies (STS) and philosophy of technology (PhilTech), this threefold distinction lays the foundations for a critical assessment of sustainable AI and details the ways that this conception reinforces the existing status quo. Third, I expand these insights and identify the techno-solutionist and economic narratives that facilitate the current enthusiasm for sustainable AI. Finally, I demonstrate how this enthusiasm inadvertently co-opts genuine climate solutions, creating the illusion of moving forward while being stuck within a system of economic, environmental, and social exploitation. The inevitable conclusion is that a climate-friendly future demands a different path."

#BigTech #Regulation #TechnoSolutionism: "In Paul Gowder’s recent blog post, as well as in his new book, he argues that we should democratize, rather than dismantle or restructure, Big Tech platforms. Echoing cyberspace analogies popular 20 or so years ago, Gowder analogizes private technology platform companies to states, and argues that law and regulation must keep these companies “intact” while transforming them into democratic fora. If only law could channel localized individual knowledge back to corporate centers of decision-making and make sure that tech companies followed their long-term rather than short-term interests, then platforms would be well-positioned to serve the public interest.
Gowder is far from alone in framing the landscape of possibilities as a choice between “breaking up” and “democratizing” Big Tech. However, as I will argue in this post, this framing obscures more than it reveals, and is symptomatic of three widespread blind spots in digital platform governance policy and scholarship: (a) an overemphasis on solutionism and a corresponding failure to adequately describe the problems at hand, (b) an obsession with categorical tradeoffs and disciplinary siloes, and (c) an impoverished account of the political economy of technology, of the co-evolution of politics and production, and of the core role of material infrastructure in digital settings. After setting out these blind spots, I introduce a practice of regulatory experimentalism, which I see as the best way forward in technology platform markets."

Maybe this is not *the* perfect metafor of #TechnoSolutionism. But damn it, it's close! :blobcateyesblush:
A thread on the Apparatus For Facilitating The Birth Of A Child By Centrifugal Force (yes, you read that right), by the superb @vagina_museum:
https://masto.ai/@vagina_museum/110938928634133136 :blobcat0_0:From now on, whenever I am thinking of building a technical "solution" to a non-technical problem, I shall try to ask myself:
Am I building a childbirth centrifuge, by chance?.. :blobcatsweats:
-
I could write a lot about #TransHumanism and #TESCREAL , but the point of this little thread is: as people interested in #solarpunk , #futurism and #narratives , we should be aware of it.
We should see it when it subtly influences the narratives around us, when yet another #technoSolutionism preacher tells us that we need to give even more control to whoever is holding power over tech.
That's it's a technological, not a social problem.
That we need an app.
That it's the only rational way.
-
I am always grateful to my employer for providing case studies for my module on Surveillance Capitalism.
As they start to implement another bout of privacy-invasive #TechnoSolutionism , I felt the need to think through the problem for myself.
Probably a very niche interest blog post, this one.

Though some might consider it as #technosolutionism, it does open doors for flexible approaches to learning. Whether or not #Edubot is involved.
