  1. Just polled my software team: without googling or asking, have you heard of #copyfail ? if so, do you know what it is sufficiently to explain it to a colleague?

Not a single hand. We make embedded #linux devices. ( yes, ours are affected.)

Call me old fashioned, but when I was a #developer I _kept tabs on shit_. First coffee every morning was pouring over #slashdot and #thedailywtf and a dozen tech specific #blogs and #newsgroups and #channels. Whats new, or blowing up?

  2. "Cal.com Is Going Closed Source Because of AI" #Slashdot

"I make the code proprietary for AI" what a pathetic excuse.
    Have they read the #agpl?
Do they know that they are not at all obliged to give the code to pigs and dogs, without asking anyone for anything?
They could easily put the code in a repo 'watched by human personnel'.

  4. Stopping visiting #CondéNast sites has not been easy. #Slashdot and #ArsTechnica have been two of my most visited sites forever!

But after learning of their treatment of their union workers, I can't in good conscience give them my attention.

"Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago" i.e. tell me I'm old without telling me I'm old 😅

    Don't Contribute Anything Relevant in #WebForums Like #Reddit, #HackerNews, #Slashdot, #StackOverflow, ...

  11. @CGM Thinking back, there were so many wonderful things in these languages, even languages that for one reason or another essentially went away. My best friend is a #Perl expert (which I used at #Slashdot). I love that Perl has regular expressions built-in to the language; but I don’t want to write Perl anymore. I loved the way #Oberon2 connected functions to types.

  16. 🚨🚀 BREAKING: #Websites beg #digital #hordes to play nice, only to be stomped by the mighty #Slashdot stampede. 😂📉 Meanwhile, 'respect our #robot policy' is the new 'please don't feed the trolls.' 🙄🤖

  17. Evidence from the #OneLaptopPerChild Program in Rural #Peru - #Slashdot
"Following students over time, we find no significant effects on primary and secondary completion, academic performance in secondary school, or university enrollment. Survey data indicate that **computer access** significantly improved students' computer skills but **not their cognitive skills**"

  18. I really dislike the "it's always DNS" trope because frequently it's something else, but #Kroger's shit was fucked all day and it was definitely #DNS. I think they have it loosely functional now, though there are so many nested CNAMEs the #dnsviz graph resembles a late '90s #Slashdot page-widening post. I can't even attach it here because, uh, it's 23,000 pixels wide 😲

  22. "Un vasto studio dimostra che bere alcolici fa bene ai livelli di colesterolo" #Slashdot

'anvedi che Veneti, Alpini ed altri sostenitori del motto "L'acqua fa male, il vino fa cantar!" avevano ragione? 😅 😜 😂

  23. do people seriously sit around and jerk off to apple?

why the fuck is apples name in the headline of this article

TDK is a well established long-standing company that has more clients than just apple

  24. Proposed #zerocarbon #Cement Solution Called 'Absolute Miracle' - #Slashdot
We have used slag cement for decades, the CEM III/C has a slag content from 81% to 95%. Slag is different from #cliker. We will see if they could actually make "real" cliker.

  25. @mos_8502 I very much welcome a revival of the #Usenet!

This is my preferred fall-back, when #reddit, #HN, #Slashdot and others finally aren't useable any more.

Maybe I'll even think of switching my decade-old (but very fine) #slrn setup to Gnus or another #Emacs-based workflow if I can find out how to sync my state across multiple machines... 🤔

  26. More and more #reddit previews stop working these days. Current example: my #RSS #Atom feed aggregator.

I want to emphasize that I've warned about that years ago:

  27. "Slashdot-efekti" täytti 25 vuotta!

Vuoden alussa tuli kuluneeksi 25 vuotta siitä, kun Slashdot -sivustolle jaettu linkki aiheutti ensimmäistä kertaa sen, että linkattu sivu kaatui linkkiä klikanneiden käyttäjämassojen alle.

  28. I find #SlashDot to be a very #meh website. Every time I end up there, they remind me they require me to enable #JavaScript

#ThankGoodness they’re kind enough to remind me why I don’t share anything from them

I get my info elsewhere, & share that which will give the information we need without the invasion of #privacy or #security that comes with JS

Websites tell us so much info- including whether or not we need them

Thanks, SlashDot. Your #irrelevance is of your own making :gnomeHey:

  29. CW: Contains representation of Goatse graphic -- if ever exposed, turn back now!

Natives of #London probably get it, but the hashtag #Arsenal would've fleshed this one out nicely... ☝️

Oh, and finally a *purpose* for the dreaded #goatse symbol!

    Extreme content warning!

  30. Anyone who has been on the fediverse for more than a few years knows how these waves go. This one was the same just so much larger and with a larger bump in plateau. But we also knew this is how the tech press was going to cover the inevitable slump because they only know how to cover Silicon Valley techbro pitches which only understand a false dichotomy of “unicorns”/ “going to the moon” or “dying” for not doing so. The fediverse is not one entity much less company. I’ll take the wins and keep moving forward. I like being the underdog anyway. Best bright side is the VCs chasing the new shiny ball will maybe leave us alone and go back to doing their vulture capitalism play elsewhere. Unfortunately that may be to try to make fetch happen with crypto and NFTs again. #fediverse #TechMedia #slashdot #VultureCapitalism #Twitter #TwitterMigration
