Also FYI, the Discourse team have been implementing ActivityPub, as have the crews developing other forum packages like BB. So although it takes quite a bit of manual work by admins at present, there is potential to bring a wide range of web forums into the threadiverse.

@pedro #Usenet is using a rather old (but very cool) protocol: #NNTP

It had its high time approx. 90s to mid 00s. I *very* much enjoyed it.

It ticks all the boxes when it comes to #federation and freedom of interface: a number of web-based services, CLI tools like #slrn (mine), #Thunderbird and other GUI-tools.

You should think of using alternatives that do not suffer from all these lock-in effects.

I'd strongly suggest a revival of the good old #Usenet (#newsgroups). We've got plenty of awesome clients for that already.

Can somebody with knowledge of C please contribute to https://github.com/taviso/nntpit (#reddit to #NNTP gateway) so that we all can profit from the many, many #newsreader features that #webforums don't have? (scoring, unread/read indicators, various views, speed, ...)

So far, the project does seem to provide read-only views and not posting capabilities. I'd LOVE to see #nntpit becoming stable for general use!

@CarlCravens I never used BBS (although I'm that old). However, I second the bad UX of #webforums. Absolute basic things like "recognizing what I've already read and what is new" is a total fail in most web forum implementations and I simply do not understand why not everyone is complaining on a daily basis. And this is just one example. 🤷
