Since the 1990s, I have been programming these "image breeders" again and again. For human-controlled evolutionary image populations. The idea originally came from Karl Sims.

One version (2009 - 2012) runs on the OLPC XO 1.5. Now again, after I brought this almost dead XO back to life.

Here, geometric shapes and glyphs are bred.

I remember volunteering with #OneLaptopPerChild #OLPC and the effort to figure out and work with Wikipedia on how to get a downloadable copy of Wikipedia (or at least some of it) that could go on the little green laptops that might not have regular access to the Internet out in remote areas.

Ramy made a home-made lab bench power supply. He sent me some photos of it powering some equipment including an #OLPC XO-1 Laptop which he managed to install Windows on. (This was when we first started talking in 2018 as he was looking for help with the OS installation.)

He told me he has a multimedia degree from Palestine University and 10 years of experience in electronics, medical equipment, electric/hybrid cars and electric bikes, maintenance and design of electronic devices, and solar energy, CNC & 3d printing, and PC maintenance/programming. I wonder how a new #olpc built around a #RaspberryPi500 and Raspberry Pi display might work? Like a ruggedized Pi500 laptop?

Going back to #OLPC wiki.laptop.org I am reminded that after Bender and the Sugar team were kicked out, the entire wiki was scrubbed and pruned of all the volunteer user pages, including my own.

It was a kick to the face of so many volunteers who gave their time and energy toward something we all believed in, and a brick in the wall of bitterness that I now have about the intersection of capitalism and free software.

I upgraded my extremely early production #OLPC XO-1 from the very first production OS (18 ya), to the latest, just now. (I volunteered on the Firmware team)

The laptop now boots 20 times slower, and has a far worse boot-up experience.

There's a metaphor here on the state of software.

"I had an old computer that I was going to give to a family friend [...] His nine-year-old brother found out about it and wanted it for himself, so I installed the latest Sugar Learning Platform [...] He is pleased to have the same operating system (OS) used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) and enjoys playing Tux Kart." I think the #framework laptop is an amazing product as well.

@dch @modos #Modos cannot claim to be the first eink laptop; one-laptop-per-child (#OLPC) beat them to it years ago. But OLPC is dated and unavailable in retail markets, so Modos looks quite interesting nonetheless.

Anyone here on #sdf have some background with the #olpc #xo-1 that you can dust off? I'm trying to rehab a g1g1-era XO-1 for the daughter of a friend, and after trying to bulldoze my old custom Debian setup with the newest Sugar, I am left with a device that only boots into the OFW command prompt and seems to be missing some vital part of its boot-up chain. (The installation process *did* seem to set up a new root filesystem, though.)
