Fabulous to have @charlesgershom and Rob visit the #Doghouse this morning. This table reflects just some of the stuff we chatted about! Features #emfcamp badge, #Uconsole, an #OLPC XO laptop (from EMF swap table) and a nice show and tell of the #OpenFlexureMicroscope!

Youtube is so weird. This video was pretty fun to make, but the CURRENT TREND is to use engaging thumbnails. I think I look pretty dorky, but the video is doing okay, so I guess it worked?
Anyway. XO-1 laptop. It's green. Tell your friends.

Since the 1990s, I have been programming these "image breeders" again and again. For human-controlled evolutionary image populations. The idea originally came from Karl Sims.
One version (2009 - 2012) runs on the OLPC XO 1.5. Now again, after I brought this almost dead XO back to life.
Here, geometric shapes and glyphs are bred.

@anmeisel My pleasure! I'll probably bring them back some time in the autumn when I have more ideas of things to do with them.
You can get a feel for what it's like to use one by playing with The Sugarizer™: https://try.sugarizer.org/ #OLPC #sugar #PermaComputing

@martijnbraam I find it very sad that OLPC's display technology did not make it anywhere else. Its color rendering is not great, and it is quirky display, but readability on direct sunlight is great and that's important outdoors. #olpc -

Fun fact: "Edge engineered/played/orchestrated/made the start up sound for the XO laptop which was made as part of the One Laptop Per Child initiative. Here is that sound. Only 4 seconds or so long and sounds exactly like Beautiful Day." -- https://u2start.com/topic/3859

I remember volunteering with #OneLaptopPerChild #OLPC and the effort to figure out and work with Wikipedia on how to get a downloadable copy of Wikipedia (or at least some of it) that could go on the little green laptops that might not have regular access to the Internet out in remote areas.

Ramy made a home-made lab bench power supply. He sent me some photos of it powering some equipment including an #OLPC XO-1 Laptop which he managed to install Windows on. (This was when we first started talking in 2018 as he was looking for help with the OS installation.)

I know Ramy from the #OneLaptopPerChild community. He told me he has a multimedia degree from Palestine University and 10 years of experience in electronics, medical equipment, electric/hybrid cars and electric bikes, maintenance and design of electronic devices, and solar energy, CNC & 3d printing, and PC maintenance/programming. He is willing to test to show his expertise in any of these subjects. Can you help connect him with anyone that can help? 2/

Curious what life might be like as a parent using the Sugar Learning Platform at home?
@pikurasa shares his reflections using Sugar both at home and in the classroom.

I wonder how a new #olpc built around a #RaspberryPi500 and Raspberry Pi display might work? Like a ruggedized Pi500 laptop?

Going back to #OLPC wiki.laptop.org I am reminded that after Bender and the Sugar team were kicked out, the entire wiki was scrubbed and pruned of all the volunteer user pages, including my own.
It was a kick to the face of so many volunteers who gave their time and energy toward something we all believed in, and a brick in the wall of bitterness that I now have about the intersection of capitalism and free software.

I upgraded my extremely early production #OLPC XO-1 from the very first production OS (18 ya), to the latest, just now. (I volunteered on the Firmware team)
The laptop now boots 20 times slower, and has a far worse boot-up experience.
There's a metaphor here on the state of software.

"I had an old computer that I was going to give to a family friend [...] His nine-year-old brother found out about it and wanted it for himself, so I installed the latest Sugar Learning Platform [...] He is pleased to have the same operating system (OS) used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) and enjoys playing Tux Kart." @jwildeboer this story is extraordinarily stupid (as far as the government goes) because the goal of #OLPC was to improve education, and then the government fumes because their population starts to make educated decisions...

Quite some years ago (2006-08), we brought the #OLPC AKA the 100$ laptop to Ethiopia as pilot. A surprising thing happened. The laptops were often without battery power in the morning. A thing that wasn’t anticipated. It had two reasons. One was the keyboard LED (it was removed in later series). It was used by the parents to have a light at home. The other was a bigger surprise. The parents used the mesh networking to discuss market prices for their produce. Fascinating. 1/8

A story I could write: an alternative timeline where the #OLPC (One Laptop Per Child AKA as the 100 dollar laptop) became the global default for education and created, with its mesh network, a decentralised approach to a true Internet Of People. A future built on connecting people. Where sharing brought progress. It can still be done. I’m convinced of that. And I continue to work on motivating many more to get to that future :) Those OLPC pictures are recent! They work and I use them :)

Hey #RetroComputing folks: I have a collection of #OLPC XO-1 devices in various states of disrepair. I have one perfectly working one, and one that seems to have a pre-release smooth back. They've largely been cannibalised over the past 18 years, and so I have at least one case that I wouldn't feel terrible putting more modern brains into.
I've dug around and found people murmuring about chucking Pi Zeros and such inside (which would be a dramatic upgrade!) but nobody really seems to have tackled the task of making a proper replacement that supports charging and display and I/O and such. If anything, the furthest people have been willing to go is to turn a working XO into a sort of dedicated X11 terminal with an X Server running remote applications on another system over the WiFi.
Has anyone here ever done true fun&games with these cases? My understanding was that the rubber keyboards were always the first thing to go, so I wonder if there are any hacks to get something else installed, just as a start. Also the cool displays are sui generis, and I'd be willing to mount something more modern in there if that's the answer.

Our #GirlsDay in the #RedHat #Munich office yesterday was a big success. Special thanks to @random_musings for sending us #OLPC that were a BIG THING :)

Well, I've almost finished reading "The Charisma Machine: The Life, Death, and Legacy of One Laptop per Child", by Morgan G. Ames and… damn, it reads like a horror story!
I've heard of the early design of #OLPC at some point, and I've felt enthusiastic about the ideas. However, I didn't know that there was a deeper ideology on education behind it, nor how much of a failure the project were.
"""
Even when the charismatic potential of the project was translated, there were technical and social barriers to acting on this potential that had been rendered invisible by the stories of easy cultural change this charismatic machine was supposed to enable. These barriers were exemplified by OLPC leaders' comparison of their laptop to a Trojan horse, a device that would give children opportunities to develop into free thinkers independent of, or counter to, the institutions around them. However, the XO laptop was a different kind of Trojan horse in the classroom, one that hijacked lessons with technical difficulties.

My B4 #OLPC prototype, 15+ years old. Original battery. Still works and battery charging is no problem. Impressive little machine :)

Just because it didn’t work doesn’t mean it was a waste of time. You just need to look for the right rewards. #OLPC
