  1. Since the 1990s, I have been programming these "image breeders" again and again. For human-controlled evolutionary image populations. The idea originally came from Karl Sims.

One version (2009 - 2012) runs on the OLPC XO 1.5. Now again, after I brought this almost dead XO back to life.

Here, geometric shapes and glyphs are bred.

  2. @jrovu

The #OLPC had a great sun-friendly tablet display some 19 years ago.

  3. @anmeisel My pleasure! I'll probably bring them back some time in the autumn when I have more ideas of things to do with them.

You can get a feel for what it's like to use one by playing with The Sugarizer™: try.sugarizer.org/ #OLPC #sugar #PermaComputing

  4. @martijnbraam I find it very sad that OLPC's display technology did not make it anywhere else. Its color rendering is not great, and it is quirky display, but readability on direct sunlight is great and that's important outdoors. #olpc

Fun fact: "Edge engineered/played/orchestrated/made the start up sound for the XO laptop which was made as part of the One Laptop Per Child initiative. Here is that sound. Only 4 seconds or so long and sounds exactly like Beautiful Day." -- u2start.com/topic/3859

  7. I remember volunteering with #OneLaptopPerChild #OLPC and the effort to figure out and work with Wikipedia on how to get a downloadable copy of Wikipedia (or at least some of it) that could go on the little green laptops that might not have regular access to the Internet out in remote areas.

  8. Ramy made a home-made lab bench power supply. He sent me some photos of it powering some equipment including an #OLPC XO-1 Laptop which he managed to install Windows on. (This was when we first started talking in 2018 as he was looking for help with the OS installation.)

  9. I know Ramy from the #OneLaptopPerChild community. He told me he has a multimedia degree from Palestine University and 10 years of experience in electronics, medical equipment, electric/hybrid cars and electric bikes, maintenance and design of electronic devices, and solar energy, CNC & 3d printing, and PC maintenance/programming. He is willing to test to show his expertise in any of these subjects. Can you help connect him with anyone that can help? 2/

  11. I wonder how a new #olpc built around a #RaspberryPi500 and Raspberry Pi display might work? Like a ruggedized Pi500 laptop?

  12. Going back to #OLPC wiki.laptop.org I am reminded that after Bender and the Sugar team were kicked out, the entire wiki was scrubbed and pruned of all the volunteer user pages, including my own.

It was a kick to the face of so many volunteers who gave their time and energy toward something we all believed in, and a brick in the wall of bitterness that I now have about the intersection of capitalism and free software.

  13. I upgraded my extremely early production #OLPC XO-1 from the very first production OS (18 ya), to the latest, just now. (I volunteered on the Firmware team)

The laptop now boots 20 times slower, and has a far worse boot-up experience.

There's a metaphor here on the state of software.

  14. "I had an old computer that I was going to give to a family friend [...] His nine-year-old brother found out about it and wanted it for himself, so I installed the latest Sugar Learning Platform [...] He is pleased to have the same operating system (OS) used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) and enjoys playing Tux Kart." 15. Thank you for your support of Sugar Labs!

It's been another great year of bringing Constructionism into classrooms in the US and around the world, empowering kids through computation and creation. We're so thankful for the support of our many volunteers, and we're grateful for our community of developers, teachers, and learners.

  16. Today, Sameer Verma and I met at a mall near San Francisco State University (SFSU). We talked about OLPC and Sugar. We also talked about Jazz, Country, and Hindustani music while listening to The Headhunters.

  17. this story abut this OLPC project was absolutely new to me. very interesting.

Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange: wrote the following post Sat, 14 Sep 2024 21:42:41 +0200 With the mesh network built in to the OLPC, a local network that worked without needing a central access point (or the CPU), farmers used the chat function to compare prices offered for their produce and found out that merchants offered different prices. Draining the batteries while their kids were sleeping. This led to pressure on the merchants to pay better. The government was not amused. And mesh networking became a problem. Ultimately an inspiring story that was never told, IMHO. 2/8
  18. The #OLPC #CL1 #xo-1 was a unique #laptop that was easy to repair. Here are some videos that OLPC Austrailia made about it. vimeo.com/olpcau
I think the #framework laptop is an amazing product as well.

  19. @dch @modos #Modos cannot claim to be the first eink laptop; one-laptop-per-child (#OLPC) beat them to it years ago. But OLPC is dated and unavailable in retail markets, so Modos looks quite interesting nonetheless.

  20. Vor 15 Jahren sorgte ein kleiner grüner Rechner für Aufsehen. Die Beta 2-Version des XO begeistert Entwickler weltweit.

  21. Anyone here on #sdf have some background with the #olpc #xo-1 that you can dust off? I'm trying to rehab a g1g1-era XO-1 for the daughter of a friend, and after trying to bulldoze my old custom Debian setup with the newest Sugar, I am left with a device that only boots into the OFW command prompt and seems to be missing some vital part of its boot-up chain. (The installation process *did* seem to set up a new root filesystem, though.)
