  1. @rl_dane @raster @darth I really like #NomadBSD, but I think it's dead. No releases in 2025 and 2026.

  2. @raster @darth

There are desktop-focused #FreeBSD derivatives. #NomadBSD is actually pretty decent. But learning how to get X/Wayland working in FreeBSD is actually pretty easy, and fun.

  3. So far #NomadBSD has been the easiest #BSD install that I have done so far. Nomad is based on #FreeBSD and appears to use their repos. For the most part everything seems to be working just fine.  The only issue I have at the moment is getting #wifi to work; not a biggie since I have it wired.

  4. Alright team, I am going to give #BSD another try. What is the best version of BSD that I can install on an Alder Lake #N100 Intel CPU?

I have a mini pc that is collecting dust at the moment and I gots the BSD itch.

Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions. I am trying out #NomadBSD which is based on #FreeBSD. Supposedly it is fairly new user friendly. The documentation is easy to follow.

If this goes belly up, I will try the other big three. At this time I don’t want to go through with manually setting up a desktop environment.

    There's always VMs. :)

You can also try #NomadBSD, a live & persistent boot USB based on #FreeBSD.

You ever get ~150 GBP burning a hole in your pocket, these make great BSD machines:

  6. @jlw_the_jobber

I couldn't get MidnightBSD working, either. #NomadBSD is pretty dope, though.

Just plain old #FreeBSD is totally daily-driveable, if you're willing to rely on the handbook for instructions on setting up wifi and X/Wayland.

  7. With #Windows10 support ending, the "try #linux" wave got a boost, but to install linux is a tad intimidating for many, and while trying "live USB" is a simple way to test stuff, it is limited. You reboot, all your changes are gone.

The one alternative that would seem to be a great one in this setting, a "live" usb, but... writable...

This seemed quite common before, in the days of "portable applications" installed on a USB drive and "plug in and run", having "portable linux" was easy to set up and get going. This does not seem to be the case anymore.

A tad sad, since it would be a great way to get people "over", keeping old content on the PC. Changing BIOS settings to boot USB first is a lot easier and less risk than the entire installation process.

The "MX Linux" distribution seem to have kept this, and presents a simple way to set up persistence from the live USB stick.

#NomadBSD (not Linux, but an easy to use BSD alternative) seems great.

    For Ubuntu, use "mkusb" .

FreeBSD, GhostBSD, NomadBSD, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, KDE Plasma

    gist.github.com/grahamperrin/a

"A concise comparison of operating systems. Some focus on root-on-ZFS, and on Plasma. Not intended to be comprehensive."

Today's comment notes that the FreeBSD Installer for 15.0-RC2 is broken for installation of non-base packages. Only one more release candidate is expected, so I doubt that this regression will be fixed.

I should probably add something about the installer for Ubuntu providing OpenZFS-native encrypted root-on-ZFS.

  9. @mikael

    Nothing!

    No tweaking, whatsoever;

It wasn't this fast the last time I tried it (via #NomadBSD)

  10. @EnigmaRotor @pertho @isaackuo @spacehobo

I like to imagine that they're taking a well-deserved vacation until 15.0-RELEASE is announced. Maybe until things settle around the tools and conventions for pkgbase. Plus, maybe, fixes for bugs in and/around overlayfs or whatever it's called.

  11. @isaackuo loosely speaking, NomadBSD comes closest to the ideal of a single installation of FreeBSD that does not require manual reconfiguration to work with diverse hardware.

Probably last tested last year with NomadBSD (FreeBSD-based). It was literally 30 seconds to resume.

OpenBSD is faster, about 6-8 seconds, at least on my old x200. Not as fast as Debian, but fast enough.

But I haven't tried it on a ton of different hardware. I think I've tested FreeBSD (via #NomadBSD) on my three thinkpads: X200, X260, X390 Yoga)

Not sure about the last one, as I just got it this year.

  15. @NebulaTide @dtonlinux @mms @nixCraft

Yep, I get it. #NomadBSD is definitely a recommendation for newbies who just want to give BSD a spin.

I've been very happy with #OpenBSD on my writing machine for over a year now.

I'd like to try #FreeBSD on my home desktop again sometime. The only reason I prefer OpenBSD to it is that it tends to do S3 suspend/resume faster. Oh, and it has X11 working out of the box after install. ;)

  16. #FreeBSD got some well deserved mainstream coverage yesterday when the YouTube channel ExplainingComputers released a video about FreeBSD on the desktop - or to be more accurate: about FreeBSD desktop derivatives: #GhostBSD #NomadBSD #MidnightBSD #HelloSystem

  17. @stu

is nice! Solid xfce desktop, persistent USB session (or desktop installer), and even GELI* , even on persistent USB.

    *It stands for "Geom ELI."
As far as i can tell, only one person on the earth knows what ELI stands for. Yes, the author. Yes, I have emailed him., No, he's not telling. No, it doesn't stand for Encryption Layer Interface. Yes, I asked. 😆

  18. To sum up, I tried three #FreeBSD-based systems today.

    Two were unusable:

    #helloSystem (super quirky, very pre-alpha)

#nomadBSD (looks beautiful, barely runs from USB)

    One was pretty good:

#GhostBSD (looks good, works well, everything well-integrated. Full upgrade in VM killed the system, but it might perform better on bare metal. Would try again. This seems like the easiest, fastest way to get a full-featured BSD desktop.)

    #BSD

  19. Here is the list of OSs that I have attempted to install (with a DE) on my Intel and have failed thus far (not in an particular order):
    1) (will try again)
    2)
    3)
    4)
    5)
    6)
    7)
    8)

*edit* I did successfully install but I did not find it to be fun to play with.
