#HolosDiscover is up to shenanigans again. Rather than making their scraper / indexer truly opt-in, they're again using @[email protected] to follow accounts that don't have search engine indexing turned off and don't have #NoBot and #NoIndex in their profiles.

I recommend blocking @[email protected] at minimum.

As a sidebar, I would support the existence of an actual opt-in index for reasons I have discussed previously. This is not that.

Google uses that same "indexable" flag but ignores everything else, keeps deleted content cached for weeks.
We shut it down after pushback. Was that the right call? Don't hesitate to share, this concerns the whole Fediverse.

To which I replied:

I then asked about second-party scraping -- someone I Follow and interact with has been "Discovered" and Indexed -- and thus my content has been indexed too, without my knowledge or consent

At that, they never returned to answer

The core point is, historically a lot of people have not wanted to found, scraped, and indexed for unknown third-party use

@evan I think it depends on the poster, but some have strong views about even basic keyword indexing of their posts, so much so you see #noindex and #nobot tags on their profiles. I don't necessarily agree with such views, but I respect them.

Doing that locally, even if purely client-side, I think circumvents such wishes.

I've wondered whether I could set something up that'd grab all the media that people post, and just present it like a communal "media" page which would allow me to look for "that meme I saw the other day" when the relevant topic comes up in conversation. Not indexing, just collating it together so that clicking on an image takes me to the post in which that media was posted.

I haven't done so not just due to lack of time, but also I'm mindful that others' may not want to be represented in such a communal "montage".

To be clear, the need for #nobot, #noarchive, #noindex, and #nobridge was not born out of some single discrete event. This happened in four separate events. This has been a recurring problem on Fedi at least four times I know of. And I'm sure there's plenty of other bots out there I don't know about that I would have to opt-out of in the same way (if they bothered to let you).

And it should be abundantly clear that there is no respect for GDPR, privacy, boundaries, or anything but a modicum of shame in any of these actions.

Not that it has ever been any different online. Go look up robots.txt. This situation has not ever been any different.

At least they respect the tags. Usually.

I don't know how to put into words how frustrating this is, but I also know that trying to argue about consent with these people is a gigantic waste of energy.

@atomicpoet Just searched a post I made yesterday on there and it showed up.

I have all of the available common flags for opting out of indexes on my accounts (#noindex, #nobot, #noarchive, #nosearch in bio, and account marked to not be indexed in settings)

Seems like it ignores all of them, and the only opt out they offer is a link to the post privacy section of the Mastodon docs.

Public posts are public, and should be expected to be permanent, but still seems condescending.

Privacy Hashtags: as users and interest in the #Fediverse grows, so do various bots, scrapers, and potential new search utilities

Vetting is done by admins via hashtag-Fediblock, but also various posts I have seen suggest using 'opt-out' hashtags in your Bio / profile

#NoBot - no interaction / scraping by bot accounts
#NoArchive - no crawling / archiving
#NoIndex / #NoSearch - do not include posts in search engine results

Of course bad-actors may ignore them (hence Fediblock), but good players should honor them
