My first Megaman Battle Network prop was a scaled-up Battle Chip for a friend's 30th birthday.

The body is made from layers of EVA foam and can hold any 4x6-inch photo. The nameplate is a plexiglass insert so you can write any names for any photos you want.

The "Recover 30 HP" photo was perfect for his birthday. Though it's been several years and he still hasn't swapped it out with any of the other photos... 😅

In 2023, I made a prop Cannon from Megaman Battle Network. It was donated to Desert Bus' Craft-Along fundraiser.

I finally learned a good deal of Fusion360 to create a 3D model. I took the model into Pepakura Designer to make 2D templates to build the majority from EVA foam. Some details were 3D printed.

I couldn't have finished it in time without the help of my family doing some odd jobs 🥰

I read something last night that said there is "no shame" in skipping the first Mega Man Battle Network from someone in their 20s saying they've played their fair share of old games. Stuff about bad signposting, invisible floors, and high encounter rates.

I don't think it's at all bad?

All that stuff is standard in 2D RPGs. MMBN is not special. The funniest part is they said they'd moved on to the sequel and were hoping it would get better after the Net area was still a bit obtuse.

I don't think they've actually played as many old games as they think they have. There are valid criticisms, but that ain't it. XD

I hit a lot of roadblocks coming to the finish line but was very fortunate to have my brother help me during his visit.

The prop I'm making for Desert Bus is the Cannon from Megaman Battle Network.

I finally learned Fusion 360 since it was crucial for this project. Once I was happy with the 3D model, I turned it into templates in Pepakura.

My current goal is to create rough prototypes to figure out the best way to assemble everything. I'm still experimenting but pretty happy with how this first prototype came out.

Just a random #GameDev tidbit:

If you as a retro gamer wonder where all the cool multicolor text of old went, well, that wasn't actually text. #MMBN just re-released with a font, but the old text was all images. And there's a very important difference. All of those font tiles, being images, had all the benefits of images. They were really no different from any other graphics in the game. A font, as in what we consider a font, like TrueType, is vector-based. And it has no provision for any kind of gradient, because it's all defined by a mess of curves and fills that simply aren't friendly to anything but a single color. They can scale to any size, but they have to be monochromatic. And this is normally fine because of the intended use case: print.

Some days ago, I updated the Battle Network maps section on Dr. Cossack's Lab as I imagined new and returning players would be using the maps as they played through the new Legacy Collection.

Well, playing they are. I've never had so much web traffic in anything, ever. I'm honestly shocked.

Just thinking about #MMBN and the technological future it envisioned, which was a lot like the pleasant present of the time. Windows XP released the same year and Clippy was in MS Word. The default background was that iconic hill. Things were natural, tactile, and inviting. And cell phones and PDAs were slowly becoming a thing. Cybiko had released a year prior and was looking like the hot new thing. All of this merged in MMBN where there was a world where cyber security was taught in grade school, everyone had a digital partner, and everything was "smart" before "smart technology" was a thing.

I had to laugh last night booting it up because all of this wonder is now cold, soulless cell phones and IoT devices.

bought #EndCycleVS on steam and while it is not exactly the same formula as the megaman battle network series, it's... kind of fun? i wouldn't say it's amazing gameplay or anything, and it is certainly different enough from #MMBN that it doesn't quite scratch the same itch, but about 1h20m in i don't really feel like refunding it

the characters and lore are kinda cute, there's a bunch of queer and poc representation and it has a native linux build, which are all bonuses i guess
