  1. Have you ever had a long multi-message threaded email conversation in your inbox with a generic subject line like "email"?

Even if not, you can probably imagine how frustrating and worthless it feels, right?

That's how the Fediverse feels for me every day thanks to a specific stubborn and prolific author who intentionally misuses ActivityPub's "Subject" field in long multi-post threaded posts, every day with a generic, meaningless title.

  3. CW: rant, meta, moderation

Real drag stumbling upon threads pointing out one of this instance's mods is/was/maybe a fascist. Not a good look. (It now appears that the person-in-question's account has been nuked from the server...) *sigh*

Sucks that this instance has a poor reputation.

  6. Not sure if other people do this, but I use notifications of favorites/boosts as a discovery mechanism for accounts to possibly follow.

I mean it's a potential sign they have similar interests, so might as well visit the profile and see if they post interesting stuff you want to see more of.

I'll often favorite a few posts along the way too, which I hope doesn't seem too weird to people!

Definitely, the navel-gazing gets a little old, and it would be great if we could branch out more in our conversation topics.

I think part of the reason we spend a lot of time talking about the Fediverse is that so many of us are still pretty new to it, so it still has the novelty effect. Also, there's a big war raging between the centralized, for-profit social media platforms, so there's never been a better time for spreading awareness of the Fediverse to potential refugees from those platforms.

But again, I agree that a constant barrage of Fediverse-related chatter on the Fediverse can get annoying pretty quickly. Maybe we could use a hashtag for that kind of stuff, so people who aren't interested in it could mute it. Perhaps something like #MetaFedi, #FediMeta, etc.?

Reminder to #journalists that I built Storywrangler while I was #dataVisualization artist-in-residence at the University of Vermont's Computational Story Lab and it provides ngram timeseries from the #Twitter firehose (10% sample), more than 100bn tweets

    Here's "mastodon" frequency this year 🤯 storywrangling.org/ngrams?ngra
