I'm not a regular McDonalds customer but I don't understand how they can get away with charging so much for hashbrowns when potatoes are so cheap.

How you can tell the whole #Trump at #McDonads thing was a stunt:
1) The McDonald's was closed to the public. All the people you see at the drive-thru are volunteers. This was partly for security reasons, to protect a presidential candidate from would-be assailants, but also:
2) Trump probably could not serve the public. He needed help tying on his own apron and he wore no hair net, both legal requirements for manning the fry station. Plus I doubt he or his campaign members knew he had to pass a food handler's permit test to serve the public. And I very much doubt he had the mental capacity to pass such a test on his own.
