Spent the entire day building a modern *nix ecosystem for the 12" 1.5GHz #PowerbookG4 with the new #SSD drive.
#MacPorts is such a great tool and community with archives for atleast some prebuilt packages.
Thanks! In total 266 packages installed today. Not done yet though but managed to get the essentials including:
- bash 5.3.9_0
- gcc14 14.3.0_0
- openssh 10.3p1_0
- openssl3 3.6.1_0
- python314 3.14.5_0
- zsh 5.9_3#VintageMac #PowerPC #Macintosh #Retrocomputing #PPC #Apple #OSX

another #macports version bump, another smooth ride.
Thanks to all the folks who work on this!

Because the 12" Powerbooks uses Nvidia GPU they are a bit more complicated than the 15" and 17" with ATI/AMD. But it can be done. During the 6 years it was my main computer back in the days it was popular to run OpenBSD on them.
Though I plan to use #macports to compile/install a modern *nix ecosystem onto #OSX 10.5 Leopard. WIth a modern GCC, OpenSSL, OpenSSH, Rust, Python etc.
There's a modern browser #Powerfox that works great.

Azure lacks broader infra support. 8 years on CLI still has considerable gaps. https://github.com/Azure/azure-cli/issues/7361 #MacPorts #Azure #Microsoft #CloudComputing

Since #MacPorts does not have the latest #HackRF drivers, I took the plunge and compiled them myself to update the firmware on my new HackRF Pro. Works great. Awesome work, @mossmann and @GreatScottGadgets!

@cliffwade I personally prefer #MacPorts, you may want to check that out. There’s a lot of comparisons out there to help you make an informed choice.

My problem is not the computer (hardware) that is broken. My problem is the software that is broken.

#Q: Why can't I just tell the package manager that it's April 1st, 2005 and install packages which were available back then?
Perhaps note if known working newer version are available?

Ok, it can be done, but it will be some work to compile #MacPass and its dependencies for #Mavericks. Because I can tweak Xcode to use llvm-18 installed by #MacPorts, but still Foundation’s classes won’t show support for modern code features like generics (which I have to remove or, to do it right, create macro based target switches). Time to create a fork so.

So according to the request statistics, since the last rotation of the access log file for the #MacPorts trac this morning, there were:
20.8k requests from IE 3
20.9k requests from IE 4
21.3k requests from IE 5
43 requests from IE 6 and
23 requests from IE 7These requests came from these Windows versions (roughly 4k per version): CE, 95, 98 (9.5k), NT 4, 2000, XP, NT 5.01(?!), Server 2003, Vista, 7, and 8.0.
I'm sure none of those are AI crawler bots.

#omegat and #okapi have been on #macports thanks to @amake for at least 5 years and I totally missed that.
sudo port install omegat
puts OmegaT in /opt/local/share/java/OmegaT
adds an "omegat" script in /opt/local/bin to directly run the app
and adds an "OmegaT.app" package in /Applications/Macport that uses the /opt/local/share/java/OmegaT executable.
Same for Okapi's apps, where "rainbow" and the others are neatly put into /Application/Macport, but can also be run from the command line.

Yes, the bug is indeed in #MacPorts. Well, in the p5.34-devel-checklib port at any rate.
If #perl #XS is broken for you in Mac Ports then https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=157638 may be helpful.

Signs I’m getting old?
- my desktop and my #Linux #VM on my Mac run #EnterpriseLinux distros (@almalinux and @centos #Hyperscale)
- said Mac is now back on #MacPorts after several years messing with Nix
- I’m typing this on an iPad after giving up on Android tablets -
