I am (so far) surviving cancer in both lungs.
I was diagnosed in September 2015 after a CT scan trying to find the source of my strange back pain. There were lots of nodules that four needle biopsies (ugh) revealed were all adenocarcinoma in situ.
That November, I had an open thoracotomy lobectomy of my lower right lung followed by a week of SBRT for my upper left lung. It took almost two months for me to recover from the surgery. I’m still in pain (post-thoracotomy pain syndrome) all the time. I had follow-up CT scans until March 2021.
It wasn’t a fight per se, but it was hard work trying to schedule appointments and argue with insurance and drive 75 miles to UCSF and 75 miles home for radiation treatments and scans.
Now I can hike and run up stairs, but I’ll never be able to do it without getting winded pretty quick.
Yes, I smoked for 13 years. I quit for good when I got pregnant with my first child in 2002. My mom died of metastatic lung cancer in 2005 while I was pregnant with my second baby.
November is #LungCancerAwareness month. It’s a killer. I’m grateful to be alive.
