  1. If you should want to observe a Toba or Yellowstone supervolcano exploding from 10 parsecs away.

Ostberg et al. 2024, "The Prospect of Detecting Volcanic Signatures on an ExoEarth Using Direct Imaging" - hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024

    via @fraser

("Direct Imaging" is a term of art here. It refers to planets being imaged separately from stars, but still appearing as dots - just very interesting ones. The aerosols & gas from an eruption would show up in disc-integrated spectra.)

  5. At the plenary on Future Science at #LPSC2024 Lynnae Quick from NASA Goddard has a talk about A Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Pilot Program to Aid in the Diversification of the Planetary Science Pipeline. Abstract: hhttps://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024/pdf/2068.pdf

  6. Some great talks are scheduled for this event, a thread... #LPSC2024

  7. Let me finish this #LPSC2024 thread with a #DwarfPlanetCeres paper, covering features I always found amusing in #DawnMission photos. Attached is one of my favs, in Kupalo crater (right "besides" Juling) photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpeg

Le Becq et al: "A new model of crater degradation on Ceres involving ice sublimation"

  9. @setiinstitute There will be a talk about these Mars volcano findings in eastern Noctis Labyrinthus this afternoon given by Pascal Lee at 4:50 p.m. at #LPSC2024. Here is Lee and Sourabh Shubham's abstract: hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024

  10. Wow! I can see why Io people go ga-ga over that moon.

The latest jupitershine JUNO image are gorgeous!

  12. I'm excited to announce that my PyHAT software is once again publicly available!

    code.usgs.gov/astrogeology/pyh

If you work with spectra or multivariate regression and don't want to reinvent the wheel, check it out. If it doesn't do what you need it to do, let me know and we can add capabilities to make it work for you!

  14. Addendum:

"dark comets" are near-Earth asteroids with no observed outgassing but measurable non-gravitational acceleration that cannot be explained by radiation pressure.

  18. Austin et al. 2024, "Venus' windblown ejecta deposits may not align with presently observed winds" - hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024.

Interesting idea of using impact ejecta as a tracer for prevailing winds on Venus in the distant past.

  20. Taylor et al. 2024 discussing "dark comets": Near-Earth asteroids with no observed outgassing but measurable non-gravitational acceleration - hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024

Consistent with a combination of episodically putting out just a bit of water vapor and spinning up to breakup.

  22. I am not attending #LPSC2024, but I am reading through abstracts.

Dong et al. 2024, "Detection of airbursts on Titan with Dragonfly" - hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024

Knowing the frequency of few-meter impactors at Saturn would be very interesting.

  28. Lunar and Planetary Science Conference #LPSC2024 abstract submitted! Number 1692.

"Dune Mixing in the Huygens and Dragonfly Landing Sites Region, Titan."

And, of course, the abstract haiku:

    Like Earth like Titan,
At beach or in dune terrains,
    Sand gets everywhere.

As rover wheels turn, // MARDI sees the landscape pass. // Rocks crowd the window.

  31. Started work on my abstract for #LPSC2024 today! I've been slowly mosaicking frames from the MARDI drive videos #Curiosity collected while exploring #MarkerBandValley. Once they're georeferenced, I hope they'll be of major use to scientists working to piece together the environmental transitions taking place on Mars when the Marker Band was deposited! Here's a roughly 4 m x 1 m segment of the drive performed on Sol 3648 (November 10, 2022).
