If you should want to observe a Toba or Yellowstone supervolcano exploding from 10 parsecs away.
Ostberg et al. 2024, "The Prospect of Detecting Volcanic Signatures on an ExoEarth Using Direct Imaging" - https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2024/pdf/2494.pdf

("Direct Imaging" is a term of art here. It refers to planets being imaged separately from stars, but still appearing as dots - just very interesting ones. The aerosols & gas from an eruption would show up in disc-integrated spectra.)

Starting Day 3 at #LPSC2024 where we left off Day 2, with the To Bennu and Back session. I have to say, I'm not surprised, but the Bennu sessions are among the most joyous I've ever covered at an LPSC. From presenters to audience, Bennu sessions are Happyville.

I have to say, after following OSIRIS-REx for so long, watching its launch on TV, following its rendezvous with Bennu & attending multiple OREx LPSC talks over the years, to witness these Quick-Look results is just surreal. I couldn't be happier for everyone involved! #LPSC2024

I'm excited to announce that my PyHAT software is once again publicly available!
https://code.usgs.gov/astrogeology/pyhat
If you work with spectra or multivariate regression and don't want to reinvent the wheel, check it out. If it doesn't do what you need it to do, let me know and we can add capabilities to make it work for you!
