The names Dinkinesh and Selam were both proposed by the NASA Lucy team and approved by the IAU.
The name Dinkinesh was proposed and approved in Feb 2023, after the NASA team selected Dinkinesh as a target for a flyby.
Selam was proposed after the Nov 1 flyby and approved in record time.
Asteroid selection and naming were driven by planetary physicist Raphael Marschall of Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, Nice, France. He is also part of the Lucy team.

Here is a pic of the fossilized skeleton of Selam (DIK-1-1) from the Paleontological collections of the National Museum of Ethiopia.
A 2018 examination concluded the hallux of the foot (the diverging left big toe bone in ths pic) was evidence of hallucal grasping and tree climbing, with an ape-like low and perhaps flat arch of the foot.
