  6. New stereo image of the asteroid and its newly discovered contact binary moon Selam, captured by the Lucy spacecraft.

I colorized this L’LORRI image using lower resolution false color data from the MVIC instrument.

  7. All the encounter data from #Lucy’s first asteroid encounter have been downloaded by now, #Dinkinesh and its moon #Selam were observed by several instruments in a successful trial run for upcoming encounters: blogs.nasa.gov/lucy/2023/11/29

  9. Hey, the moon of main belt #asteroid #Dinkinesh discovered by the #Lucy spacecraft this month has just been given an official name by the IAU: Selam. From wgsbn-iau.org/files/Bulletins/ (page 5): "Selam is the name given to the fossil remains of a 3-year old Australopithecus afarensis female, the same species as the Lucy fossil. It was found in Dikika, Ethiopia, in 2000 by paleoanthropologist Zeresenay Alemseged. The name is an Ethiopian word meaning ‘peace’". See also groups.io/g/mpml/message/39114

  10. "NASA’s Lucy Surprises Again, Observes 1st-ever Contact Binary Orbiting Asteroid" by @NASA / @NASASolarSystem - #Asteroid #Dinkinesh's moon is a binary pair of two smaller asteroids which fell onto each other science.nasa.gov/missions/lucy #NASA #astronomy

  11. As NASA’s #Lucy spacecraft continued to return data of its first asteroid encounter on Nov. 1, 2023, the team was surprised to discover that #Dinkinesh’s unanticipated satellite is, itself, a #ContactBinary: science.nasa.gov/missions/lucy – it is made of two smaller objects touching each other.

  12. After the Southwest Research Institute-led Lucy mission flew past the asteroid #Dinkinesh, the team discovered that it is even more “marvelous” as its newly discovered #satellite is now shown to be a double-lobed #moonlet.

  13. Surprise! Surprise!
The newly discovered companion of asteroid Dinkinesh, is itself a contact binary – that is, it is made of two smaller objects touching each other.

This second image was taken by Lucy about 6 minutes after closest approach from a distance of approximately 1,630 km.

H/T to @abesamma for alerting us about this news.

  14. It turns out there is more to the marvelous #asteroid #Dinkinesh and its newly discovered #satellite than first meets the eye.

  15. A new image from last week's #NASA #LucyMission encounter with the asteroid #Dinkinesh just dropped.

Turns out that the second (previously undiscovered) asteroid in the system is itself a contact binary.

  16. So, they went out into space to look at an asteroid close up, and when they got there, they discovered the asteroid with a name, has a "moon" with no name right on it

And no ones said it yet, but when its named it should reference The Little Prince or its author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

I mean look at this. The Little Prince "moon" doesnt just look like him, it seems to portray his whimsy.

  18. Am 1. November passierte die NASA-Raumsonde Lucy einen kleinen Asteroiden in geringem Abstand und lieferte eine Überraschung: Das Objekt Dinkinesh ist ein Doppelkörper.#Asteroid #Dinkinesh #Lucy #Raumsonde #NASA #Raumfahrt #Planetenforschung #Sonnensystem #Planetoid #Asteroidenmond #Astronomie

  19. The images of Dinkinesh and its moon may sound like a great discovery about our solar system, but let's keep in mind that there are millions of asteroids between here and Jupiter and trillions of icy ones beyond the orbit of Pluto. Only the nearest and largest ones have been catalogued. Most are too small to be seen by our most powerful telescopes.

  22. @angry_astro SURPRISE!!
The @NASA #Lucy in the sky #Asteriod probe discovers a second asteroid orbiting #dinkinesh
This unexpected development demonstrates how many undiscovered asteroids are lurking out there, and how easily a Von Neumann Probe could evade detection, even if it was inert.

  23. The now iconic image of asteroid binary Dinkinesh was taken by Lucy's L'LORRI high-res visible B&W imager.

    Type: Ritchey–Chrétien telescope
FOV: 0.28° (Dinkinesh was about 0.1° wide at closest approach)
    Pixels: 1024x1024
Diameter of primary mirror: 20.8 cm
    Focal length: 262 cm
    Wavelength range: 450-850 nm
    Typical exposure times: 0.05 - 0.20 sec
    Mass: 12.0 kg
    Power: 10.6 W

L'LORRI is derived from the LORRI instrument on the New Horizons spacecraft.
