  1. I'm creating an email listserv for my nonprofit company to discuss FOSS / FOSH that my company will create. It's meant to be a list to enable the community to discuss and share insights on issues. I've found gaggle.email to provide workable options for using my own custom domain name and a REST API.

  2. The decommissioning of the WebAIM list is a perfect opportunity to recognize and promote the other longest-serving mailing list dedicated to accessibility: the Webdev (or Web Design Update) newsletter run by @laura_carlson out of the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Since 2002, this weekly email newsletter has reliably collected and categorized the best articles on web accessibility. I can't recommend it highly enough.

  3. Sad news: the WebAIM mailing list is shutting down on August 27.

    The archives will remain available.

Since 1999, the WebAIM @webaim email list has distributed discussions on web accessibility and provided a virtual community for a diverse range of members. I've been subscribed since 2002, and I learned more about accessibility from the list and its members than from any other single source on the web.

    End of an era.

  4. I am subscribed to a moribund scientific listserv.

A week ago one of the admins wrote to the list noting that the last post was in 2021, and asked us if it was time to shut down the list. Nobody replied.

Today another admin wrote that it was probably time to archive the whole thing.

Immediately somebody replied to the whole list with an empty email, and the subject line: "UNSUBSCRIVE"

Even in death, listserv gonna listserv.

  5. If I wanted to set up a most basic listserv for my immediate neighborhood, as a low-barrier alternative to Facebook/Nextdoor/etc., what would be the best place to do that?

Right now it looks like Groups.io or setting up my own Mailman server?

  6. I maintain an email discussion list on google groups for a small nonprofit community group. We have about 20 participants. I'm looking to bail from google groups, mainly because of the unremovable footer in every message that gets repeated ad infinitum. Can anyone suggest an uncomplicated alternative? I want to keep it as an email listserv (not a discord-type thing, etc.) Thanks! #email #listserv #googlegroups

  7. i’ve been really happy with groups.io as a meetup replacement for #triangleBikeCamping. it’s free and just email, which everybody has. i post events, and then offload the ticketing to tickettailor.com, which only takes a percentage if i charge for tickets, which is rare.

  8. Before I could access the Internet, I was on BITNET. For a system based on remote job entry, it was surprisingly useful and fun! LISTSERV originated there and most communication was non-interactive. There still was a way to do messaging and even a chat network existed that inspired IRC. The limitations of BITNET resulted in a lot of creative solutions.

  9. So a friend approached me with an intriguing #question that I feel must exist in some form:

Is there a way to use #email chains as a database for #forum-like experiences? Email the server to get a list of forums/topics, then subscribe to have the server send new messages to your email & you can add to it by replying. The goal is to not require people to have yet another website+login to keep track of.

I know about #LISTSERV, but it's way too expensive to just try out/use with a small group!

  10. The #AlgebraicTopology listserv that Don Davis has been running is at the end of its life cycle. People are talking about the alternatives and server costs, but does anyone know of a #p2p alternative which could perform this task for free?

  11. I am having a hard time relating to the current batch of "what was your first social media site" memes. For me, it was an asynchronous dialup message board where you'd connect, download the updates, log off, reply offline, then dial in just long enough to send/receive new updates.

After that is it was listservs. (Email discussion groups). For a lot of people it was Usenet, or local dialup BBSs.

Social media doesn't have to be "a site".

  12. Can anyone point me to a (modern) guide to setting up an (old fashioned) listserv? ie a mailing list with automated sign up/sign off and moderated peer-to-peer sending #email #listserv

  13. Welcome, latest #TwitterMigration. #Introduction I'm a former #Writing #Teacher and #Listserv #Moderator. Now I run a weekly crime-themed #Poetry site. I've been on #Mastodon since November '22 and left #Twitter for good in March '23. I often post about #TV, #Movies, and #Reading.

  14. You must of messed around with #email #ListServ's and found out #defaults w/o finding the #unsubscribe #email of a high traffic ListServe'd you 📨🙉😠😤😡🤬😤😠😡🤬😠😠😡😤🤬🤬
