I keep thinking about how we need a federated and 'more resilient to no internet' code interaction mechanisms and my brain keeps going out to mailing lists with just a friendlier UI. Like, that's literally solving everything (barring the replication of the codebase, just have different git hosts/mirrors ig?)
Like, why are we not doing it again?

I ask this every now and then here: has someone a #nixos #mailserver #snm setup for #mailinglist #mailinglists with #publicinbox (the software, not the concept) that they can share?

Dave Cheney went further in 2017: Please stop using chat in general for open-source communities. Even a free protocol like IRC, XMPP, or Matrix disadvantages people with a full-time job and people in less-privileged time zones. Community leaders are often too quick to segment conversations into different channels, which effectively hides the activity.

Do people still use mailing lists?
I've been trying to find an email hoster that does mailing lists, which seems hard to find. Now I'm trying to setup my own mail server with Mailman integration and it's really really painful. Documentation and examples are missing stuff all over the place, shitty web apps, all that. Why? Does just no one use it anymore, so no one really cares? I don't quite get it 🙈
-
Why use mailing lists in 2025? Apparently, retro email chains are making a comeback, bringing with them all the excitement of reading the endless headers and "X-Virus-Scanned" footnotes. 📧🤦♂️ Who knew dragging the '90s into the future would be so...innovative? 🚀

The decommissioning of the WebAIM list is a perfect opportunity to recognize and promote the other longest-serving mailing list dedicated to accessibility: the Webdev (or Web Design Update) newsletter run by @laura_carlson out of the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Since 2002, this weekly email newsletter has reliably collected and categorized the best articles on web accessibility. I can't recommend it highly enough.

That mixed feeling you get when you finally unsubscribe from a group of tech-related mailing lists that you've been on for between 20 and 25 years. And then delete the tens of thousands of emails from them.
That feeling. It happened, and it's a bit weird.

Anyone else noticed that more and more often #mailinglists of #network operator groups are used to request off-list responses on contact points to certain service providers, because there are no contact points listed otherwise?

The “we regret to inform you that our site is closing" bulkmail vendors are busy. They're sending #spam promoting one site, even as they send mails announcing that the other (identical) site is closing.
The countdown timer on the 'closing' site (which has been announcing the site's impending closure in less than a day for more than 3 weeks) is exactly sync’d with the timer on the other, but one says “… shutting down in …" while the other says “Next database update in …”

Re, my #newsletter interrogations a few days ago.
After much thinking, I concluded that I don't need a newsletter. I already barely have the time and energy to write my blogs often enough, if I start writing a newsletter again, it will mean even less writing elsewhere.
So, I will move my Substack subscribers to a mailing list. But because I will die if I'm not constantly facing choices to make, I do have two active mailing lists (Mailchimp and Jetpack) and I'm not sure if I should keep both or not (and where to move my Substack subscribers).
I love the simplicity of integration in the blog itself of the #Jetpack mailing list but I've heard that there were issues recently, I forgot which ones. Integrating Mailchimp into my blog again is not a big deal but would require adding plugins and such.
And because I wouldn't mind if rich readers helped me financially (the reason I started the Substack newsletter in the first place back in the days), I'm wondering what payment system I should add.
- Patreon? I've had an account and links to it for years, and never had a paying subscriber. Should I persist? Make it more prominent on my blog? Or is it because I'm just not big enough?
- Buy Me a Coffee? I make roughly 100 € a year from donations (not even enough to pay for the hosting) so maybe I should keep it? But I feel that it's not known enough and maybe some people are reluctant to use it?
-Ko-Fi? I haven't used it at all, just created an account a few days ago, but it seems interesting.
- A PayPal button? I have one on my main blog, and people have sent me donations in the past, but once or twice a year (a reader gave me $100 once!!!)
Does anyone have feedback on both things?
- MailChimp vs JetPack MLs (or a third one to advise - with reasons, please, not just name-dropping)
- Patreon vs Buy Me a Coffee vs Ko-Fi vs PayPal (or something else, see above)

I've stopped using #Substack for quite a while now (yes, the Nazi thing) but I have yet to find a replacement. I thought that #Jetpack 's Newsletter function would work as a replacement (Do I really need a newsletter in addition to my blogs? Couldn't they just double as newsletters?) but it kinda sucks.
Yes, I know, #Ghost is all the rage, but you see, Ghost is not free, and I'm not made of money, and the last time I checked I had one paying subscriber on Substack.
So, do you know any newsletter system that could work for me? Either inside a Wordpress site, or as a separate entity, but free and if possible not owned by an evil corporation?
I currently have about 300 subscribers (and one unique paying one, if they still are, I'm not even sure)
I heard that #Beehiiv could work as a replacement. What do you think? Does anybody have advice to share?

Re: 3, I think my favourite one was that one platform where email addresses weren't actually deleted when the user unsubscribed from a list. 🤔 😬
-
I've spent the last few days looking at mailing list platforms for a #newsletter, and I've realised there's basically four types of platforms:
1. Incredibly expensive with a bunch of features you don't need
2. Very pretty UI that doesn't actually work
3. Basic functionality requires mandatory #GDPR violations 🙃
4. UI looks like something from the late 90s and works 85% of the timeObviously I'm looking at a #4 as the best candidate. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey. Hey you. Yes, you. Company.
Do 👏 not 👏 sign 👏 up 👏 your 👏 employees 👏 for 👏 email 👏 lists 👏 without 👏 their 👏 permission!
Bonus points, 👏👏 don't 👏👏 inform 👏👏 us 👏👏 either!
This is the second email I've gotten within 48 hours that the new childcare benefits provider my company has partnered with exists, and that I haven't activated my benefits.
I have no kids. I don't even have my own home. I didn't sign up because it's not applicable. Nor did I consent to be added to a mailing list by my employer. Nor did my employer ever disclose to me that they would be adding me to mailing lists of company partners, anywhere. Nor did said partner's email conform to CAN-SPAM.

Is there an alternative to Google Groups that has reasonable pricing, unlike Groups.io, and that's exclusively a normal mailing list without bells and whistles?
-
I've posted it before in the past but I'll post it again:
The single best thing I ever did with my #email account(s) was to set up a #filter for #MailingLists or #Subscriptions and have it skip the inbox and apply a label to it.
It catches 99% of things and makes me very happy to not have them in my inbox or notifications.
(Also makes them easy to find to unsubscribe etc)
-
I'm not saying we should all go back to #mailinglists lists and scatter our stuff all over the place. #GitHub and centralized repos in general have a lot of advantages. But there's a trade-off to be made and you should be aware of it before you click "add repo" just because they say it's free.

today: unsubscribed from info-gnu-emacs. subscribed in March 2015 and I'm not sure if I read it even once. PROBABLY at some point I read an Emacs release announcement??? maybe????

CW: Mailchimp Mailing List Woe
@conniptions I haven't noticed a full roundup of #substack alternatives for #MailingLists. So, uh, this isn't comprehensive, haha:
* #buttondown would be $9/month for 100 to 1k subscribers
* #beehiiv is free up to 2500 subscribers -
I finally enabled bottom posting & plain-text in Thunderbird.
I've been doing this manually for mailing lists for a short while.
