  3. On #Lesvos, the architecture of migration deterrence laid bare

    https://www.thenewhumanitarian.org/editors-take/2026/07/22/lesvos-architecture-migration-deterrence-laid-bare

Last September, the centre-right government, in office since 2019, passed a law that gives people whose asylum claims are rejected 14 days to leave the country or face prison sentences of two to five years. The law also introduces a €10,000 fine for people found guilty of entering the country illegally and raises the amount of time people can be detained for arriving without paperwork from 18 to 24 months. Leete and others I spoke to said they are seeing an increasing number of people detained and imprisoned under its provisions.
The #Greek government also recently announced that it will provide cash bonuses of €250 to state-appointed lawyers who convince their asylum seeker clients to withdraw their claims and leave.
Both of these measures come amid an #EU - wide push to increase deportations, which critics have said mirrors the immigration policies of US President Donald #Trump

  11. Plomari, #Lesvos: Local businesses expressing solidarity with #Palestine are targeted by #Zionists. According to complaints from residents and workers, in recent weeks there have been cases of aggressive behaviour, negative and defamatory comments on online platforms and direct intimidation of workers by people of Israeli origin.

...The incident came to a head when a store employee was subjected to ironic comments and insulting treatment inside the store by members of a family of Israeli visitors. One young man mockingly called her a "supporter", leaving clear hints about her political stance, and shortly afterwards his mother allegedly stopped her in the street to take a photo and directed an ironic remark at her, which was seen as a clear attempt at intimidation.
Reactions in the local community were immediate. Residents expressed their strong annoyance at the occurrence of such phenomena, stressing that Plomari was and remains a hospitable place, but not a silent one. Village society, they argue, has historically demonstrated solidarity, humanity and political sensitivity, and will not be silent in the face of pressure or intimidation practices.
