"Many people are unaware that #SantaMonica, the coastal enclave now known for its beaches, star residents and hot real estate, was once home to a thriving Black community. Apparently there is a phone book buried in a copper box in the cornerstone of the Los Angeles Hall of Justice.
Also a personnel list. Because I guess they've literally been burying public records in this city for almost a whole century.
This is from 1925:

"It remains one of the most shameful episodes in #LosAngeles history: In 1871, an angry mob lynched 18 Chinese men following a dispute — at a time when the city’s total population was barely 5,700. Now a monument will be built in downtown to honor the victims of this massacre," @cmonstah. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2023-05-04/design-team-chosen-for-downtown-memorial-to-victims-of-1871-chinese-massacre #LAhistory #CivicMonuments

"A project to remember the 1871 massacre that killed at least 18 people — or about one-tenth of Los Angeles’ Chinese population at the time — is one step closer to reality. The city’s Department of Cultural Affairs has selected six design finalists from a pool of 176 entries submitted from all over the world."
