(The Empirical Labs Distressor is a modern interpretation of the 1176, and it is very expensive… I had the chance to use the analog unit live a couple of times.)
I'd say you can achieve a very similar sound with both plugins.
EDIT: The current version is called Disto and looks a lot more like the Distressor and it is more expensive than Korneff KA1776, which is currently on sale… and available for the 3 popular OSses.
