Mayor Wilson orders major overhaul to deliver more street safety improvements more quickly, including on busy high-injury roadways
Mayor Katie Wilson signs five executive orders. Photo from SDOT. In one of the biggest overhauls of Seattle's approach to making streets safer, Mayor Katie Wilson signed five executive orders (PDF) to speed up delivery of safety fixes and expand the city's safe streets strategies. The mayor announced and signed the orders in front of Cleveland High School flanked by Councilmembers Eddie Lin and Alexis Mercedes Rinck, staff from SDOT, Seattle Police and Seattle Fire, Cleveland High coach Aaron Roche, and community safe streets advocates. Transportation Committee Chair Rob Saka, who introduced the starts of his own Vision Zero legislation Thursday, was not in attendance. "We've made important progress, but every serious injury or death on our streets is one too many," Mayor Wilson said in a statement. "We know what makes our streets safer. This Executive Order is about turning our commitment into action — getting proven safety improvements on the ground and bringing the full City together to prevent serious injuries and deaths." Her line "We know what makes our streets safer" is spot on because Seattle has the plans, the professionals and the voter-approved funding to do a lot of effective work, and now we need to actually do it. The orders are wide-ranging with a mix of immediate actions as well as changes to how project delivery functions. A list of projects got bumped up in the schedule, including a protected bike lane on SW Wildwood Place where Maridee BonaDea was killed in June and a safety redesign of 12th Ave between King Street and Yesler Way where Christian Salyer was killed, also in June. The Wildwood change is due for construction the end of the year, and the larger 12th Ave project is due in the middle of 2027. The mayor has also directed SDOT to speed up delivery of "traffic calming on high-speed arterial corridors, including Martin Luther King Jr. Way S., Swift Ave S., 15th Ave NE., 1st Ave S., and Dexter Ave N." and "safety upgrades at 19 identified high-collision locations, including locations on Aurora Ave N., Rainier Ave S., and 5th Ave." Achieving the orders hinge on changing the way SDOT delivers safety projects, including identifying ways to deliver smaller sets of changes sooner. This is especially important for big projects on major high-injury streets where dangerous conditions remain in place throughout the often drawn-out and easily-delayed process for developing a major high-budget rebuild. The mayor specifically calls out Aurora Ave N, Rainier Ave S, S Jackson St, 4th Ave S, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way S. in her order. "While longer-term work is in process, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is directed to add a new, early delivery phase to corridor projects on the High Injury Network focused on implementing coordinated safety improvements early," the executive order states. "These changes can impact lane configuration, turning, and parking on Seattle arterials, but SDOT should prioritize safety-first solutions tailored to the type and severity of crashes on the corridor." As a person who led a recall against a sitting Seattle Mayor.... this one doesn't look like it has a snowballs chance at hell of working.
Opportunistic Karen's say Seattle's Mayor Wilson should be recalled over the Bite of Seattle Shooting and checks notes... turning off some of the police CCTV cameras.

"The #Seattle Police Department will work with local #Jewish communities to ensure their safety during the #HighHolidays amid surging anti-Jewish violence nationwide, #KatieWilson, #mayor of Seattle, told JNS.
“Seattle has no place for #antisemitism or hatred of any kind,” the mayor, who identifies as #socialist, told JNS.“I know Seattle’s Jewish community is acutely aware of a rise in antisemitism and is feeling anxiety and concern,” Wilson said. “I believe every Seattle resident needs to be able to participate fully in civic life without fear, and my office welcomes dialogue with the Jewish community for sharing what they need to improve safety.”
Wilson’s comment to JNS appears to be the first time she has addressed #Jew-hatred in the city publicly since she became mayor in January.
#RoshHashanah begins this year on Sept. 11 at night and lasts two days. #YomKippur, which lasts a day, begins on Sept. 20."

#DemocraticSocialists surge in mayoral races across the US as anti-Trump fervor rises
By MATT BROWN
Updated 12:05 AM EDT, June 19, 2026WASHINGTON (AP) — "As #JaneeseLewisGeorge paves a path to the mayor’s office in #WashingtonDC, she’s told voters they could have it all.
"Her unapologetically expansive, left-wing agenda includes subsidized or even free #childcare, increased down payment assistance for homebuyers and community resources to reduce crime, plus a promise to aggressively confront President Donald Trump’s attempts to reshape the nation’s capital.
" 'People are tired of hearing what government can’t do. They want to hear what government can do,' Lewis George said in an interview before the city’s primary, where she defeated her Democratic opponents and positioned herself to win the general election in November in a city dominated by Democrats.
"Lewis George’s victory signals a break with a quarter-century of centrist governance in Washington, and it puts her in the vanguard of democratic socialists who have ascended in urban politics over the last year. #ZohranMamdani toppled Andrew Cuomo, the scion of a political dynasty, on his way to becoming New York City mayor. #KatieWilson won an upset victory to lead Seattle last fall. And this month, #NithyaRaman clinched a spot in the November runoff against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass."

Hundreds of happy people ride with Mayor Wilson to open Bicycle Weekends + A smaller group protested, including one with a neo-Nazi sign
Hundreds of people biked with Mayor Katie Wilson to the opening celebration for the first Bicycle Weekend of 2026 Saturday. It was the mayor's first bike ride as mayor, she said, and she rode with her daughter on the back of a cargo bike. After Wilson, her daughter, and former City Councilmember Tammy Morales cut the ribbon, Wilson's daughter took the ceremonial first ride on her balance bike. "Before my daughter was born, biking was actually my main way of getting around this city for transportation, and it was also usually the fastest and most convenient way to get around," Mayor Wilson said during a short speech to the crowd gathered at the start. "It kept me active and outside in the fresh air and it helped me to feel connected to the city and to my communities. So it feels really really good to be back on a bike and here with all of you today." Mayor Katie Wilson rides down the Colman curves to the start of Bicycle Weekends. Not visible, but her daughter is riding with her on the back of the bike. The opening ride started at Judkins Park Station, went through the bike tunnel and down the Colman curves to Mount Baker Beach Park at the northern start of the car-free event. Seattle has been holding car-free days on this stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard since 1968, but Mayor Wilson expanded the number of events to cover every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day (except during SeaFair, which closes the road for its own purposes). "Expanding Bicycle Weekends was very important to me coming into office," Mayor Wilson said. "We heard from so many people that this event could be more consistent and reliable. So expanding to every weekend this summer means that more people can enjoy greater access to this beautiful park. People from all over Seattle can come here all summer long, people of all ages, to walk, bike, roll, push strollers, and let their kids run freely around without the fear of getting hit by a car." [GOOD NEWS FROM USA]

Seattle Elects a Left-Wing Mayor With a Light Résumé but #Mamdani Appeal
#KatieWilson, who narrowly defeated the incumbent, Bruce Harrell, emerged from the city’s left-wing activist class and brings with her little experience in governing.
from #NewYorkTimes #NYT
[shareable 30-day gift article]In a state without an income tax, the mayor-elect has promised to pursue what she calls “#progressive” new sources of revenue to pay for #housing and other basic services, including potential local taxes on capital gains, digital advertising and buildings purposely left vacant. She has pledged to push a $1 billion bond to build more homes and new protections for renters, who make up 56 percent of the city.
“There was a time when we saw #Seattle as kind of a laboratory for progressive policy,” Ms. Wilson said in an interview this fall. “And that time’s not now anymore. But why can’t it be?”

Our Member of Congress, Pramila Jayapal had endorsed #KatieWilson for Mayor of Seattle. Here's her IG statement on the win: "A huge congratulations to Katie Wilson for reminding people of what is possible and running a terrific, grassroots campaign focused on making Seattle a city where everyone can afford to live. Katie's victory adds to the exciting sweep of progressive candidates here and across the country I was proud to endorse, including for Seattle City Council, Seattle City Attorney >>

Seattle's Mayor Bruce Harrell has posted his concession speech to the Seattle Channel.
It's always great to see democracy in action... oh and gotta thank our lucky stars Bruce didn't finish defunding the public access channel to give more money to the cops otherwise we might not have been able to see it. 🥴

@jbouchez There's a noticeable overlap in our population of transit riders and affordable housing advocates in Seattle, as well as other cities. Mayor Wilson, a founder and administrator of Transit Riders Union (which is hiring now!) was active in the earlier progressive council activity to develop tax and funding Jump Start with former council members Morales and Mosqueda. They have researched and strategized community housing approaches. Assume a brain trust here.

Katie Wilson elected mayor of Seattle!!! YESSS! Following Zohran Mamdani's resounding victory in NYC, here is a young progressive woman who defends the poorest, doesn't own a car, and takes public transportation. She promises to fight fiercely against real estate speculation. Even if I live in Québec, that news make my day.
