"In 1901, #Milwaukee native #LizzieKander was teaching #kosher #cooking classes to #immigrants at the Milwaukee #Jewish Mission. The women copied down the #recipes and lessons. But to #Kander, this felt like wasted time.

Kander envisioned compiling the recipes and household tips into a pamphlet to sell to the broader community, and in the process, raise money for Milwaukee’s urban poor.

“#TheSettlementCookBook” would go on to become the most successful charitable #cookbook in #American history with 40 #editions and over two million copies sold.

#NoraRubel, a #professor in the #University of #Rochester’s Department of #Religion and #Classics, says “The Settlement #Cook #Book” became an integral part of Jewish American material culture.

She recently spoke to WPR’s “#Wisconsin Today” about her new book, “Recipes for the Melting Pot: The Lives of The Settlement Cook Book.”

Today I learned a thing. I hiked often in the gorge from the first picture, but today I found out this was only sort of formed naturally. The river Kander was causing flooding and other disruptions to the village of Thun (picture 2), so early in the 1700's (!), they decided to dig a tunnel to get a more direct way for the Kander to reach Lake Thun (picture 3). However, in 1714 the tunnel collapsed by the raging water of the Kander and the river cut the gorge in the decades after that. Picture 4 shows the current situation.
