Follow up to this in case it's useful to anyone (it was a month ago already?!), I went ahead and just bought Just Cause 2 from GOG as it was a couple of quid in a sale.
Used Wine Tricks to install and a tip from the database on Wine HQ suggested also installing the file d3dcompiler_47. Now runs fairly okay. The odd crash to desktop but playable.

Had a go at getting the #Steam version of #JustCause2 working on #linuxmint last night. No joy and nothing to do with Linux - the exe is currently broken on Steam?!
The solution is to apparently use the .exe from GOG! Ha!

The majestic, fabled double helicopter...
I love games using existing environment and elements in fixed camera cutscenes. I wasn't even going back to that base later, the existing helicopter will just get de-spawned.

one of the community servers for #JustCause2 multiplayer mod was closing down after 7 years and they had a sunset event that I attended
