Investors await #US #JOLTS report, expecting a dip in #JobOpenings. A potential sign of easing #labor market conditions could fuel hopes for #Fed rate cuts, cooling #wage and #inflation pressures. Fed likely to hold rates steady but watching for signs of sustained slowdown.

Before today's #Fed FOMC meeting and Chair #Powell's speech, several key #US data releases are worth monitoring, including #ADP Nonfarm #Employment Change, US #Manufacturing PMI, #ISM Manufacturing PMI, and #JOLTs Job Openings.

Quits rate past 23 years.
One explanation for big layoffs? Quits are down. But when you look: they're down compared to 2022, they're not down compared to 5+ years ago.
Another explanation? Generative #AI is expensive and companies are laying people off to free up cash to spend on that.

No #JOLTS data on teachers, specifically. The "State and local government education" category reported in JOLTS is probably just under half K-12 teachers, if the CPS is any guide.
But the #NCES does have new data out today on teacher shortages consistent with your observations. Here's the write-up at the Washington Post.

Every day it feels like another big American company is announcing layoffs. But even if you squint, it is hard to find those layoffs showing up in job-market statistics. My latest #jolts

A third report today - the #JOLTS report from the Labor Department - shows job openings remained above 10 million in October, while "layoffs remained quite low."
