The #2004WorldJuniorFigureSkatingChampionships were held at the #DeUithof in #TheHague, #Netherlands between February 29 and March 7. Junior age eligible figure skaters competed for the title of World Junior Champion in #mensSingles, #ladiesSingles, #pairSkating, and #iceDancing. Due to the large number of participants, the men's and ladies' qualifying groups were split into groups A and B. The ice dancing qualifying event was split into two groups as well.

It's cool to see. Young people being in sports like this usually means access to an ice rink that is there year round. More diversity in national competitions often come from more equity in access to training spaces. -

The real brilliance of Guignard/Fabbri's robot programme is their commitment to the stiff, robotic choreography. In a sport like ice dancing, all the movement relies on fluid, graceful shifting of weight to highlight the curves of the edges and circles.
And then Guignard & Fabbri come in, moving like robots, while STILL doing all the footwork and lifts and spins and never once wobbling. That must be SO HARD

Ok, Grand Prix de France pairs short programmes! First up: Faula/Belle.
A new team for me! Sounds like they didn't 'earn' the spot, but were given it because France, as a host nation, gets to send an extra French team beyond what they get from their ISU rankings.
Poor things. I could, well, I could tell.

Ok, yes, fine, Guignard and Fabbri did not have a great night. Fine. Ok.
But that was SO COOL. Like, they gave NO SHITS about ANYTHING when they put that robot programme together. I can't wait to see it again throughout the season.

Dang, Reed/Ambrulevicius have a really cool free dance! I love it: puppet comes to life and controls the master. Such a great 'fight' during the choreo character step sequence.
Lopareva/Brissaud being cool and inscrutable, as always. I don't understand what they do, but I do enjoy looking at it.

I rather like Bratti/Somerville, but I wish they'd choose a different position for their curve lift. I commented upon that same thing last year, as I recall.

A dance of two parts for Lauriault/Le Gac. The first half felt very uncomfortable and tentative. They were clearly *thinking* very hard about the programme. But the second half was lots of un -- especially the choreo lifts and choreo spins, which were lots of fun.
I don't understand why they're so uncomfortable here. They've already competed this programmed weeks ago at Skate America. Why isn't it gelling?

Neset and Markelov's free dance is very cool! I love the stationary lift and their twizzle positions (especially the first) are super-cool.
But I gotta say, 'My Love Will Never Die' is first and foremost always going to belong to Guignard and Fabbri.

I like Lagouge/Caffa's fs very much. Such an interesting, introspective theme, with a wonderful choreo character step sequence.
I love choreo slide moves.
I think Caffa needs to speed up his rotation in those rotational/stationary/choreo lifts more.

Pate/Bye: a bit tentative. This could be quite awesome, but it's not there yet. I loved the first part of the combination lift; pity they bobbled on the second part.

Grand Prix de France free dance:
I really like Dupayage/Nabais's free dance! Such interesting interpretation and choreography. I loved the choreo slide movement.

Reed/Ambrulevicius are always such fun to watch. And I have always loved Lauriault/Le Gac after their Pink Panther programme.
Lopareva/Brissaud always do something just a bit . . . weird. I really love that for them. And 'Rah Rah Rasputin' is a hilarious song, given, like, the history of the guy.

Ok, Neset and Markelov are new to me. I think that, at 18/21 they are much too young to be married to each other, but they do have a bomb-ass rotational lift.

Aww, Mrazkova and Mrazek have rather a charming programme. But I gotta say, 'Yellow Submarine' is really a terrible song.

Mmph -- Pate and Bye leave me pretty cold. I like the blue costumes, but I'm just not a fan of the programme.
I will say, however, that I quite enjoy the no-touch midline step sequence in these rhythm dances. Side-by-side matched choreography always looks much more elegant to me than skating in hold, where the arm grasps always look just a little bit messy to me, regardless of how well it's executed.

Nothing much to say about Bratti/Somerville or Dupayage/Nabais. Lots of youthful energy and fun to watch, but I'm not going to remember them next week.
(Well, Bratti/Somerville had some very cool twizzles.)
