  1. Researchers in South Africa uncovered new Homo naledi remains deep inside a hidden cave system. The mysterious species may have intentionally buried their dead despite having much smaller brains than modern humans — challenging everything we thought about human evolution.

  6. Evidence shows Homo naledi deliberately buried their dead

Deep inside the Rising Star cave system in South Africa, researchers have discovered what is possibly the oldest known evidence of deliberate burial by a non-human species of early hominin. The researchers, publishing in eLife, are studying Homo naledi, a small-brained species that lived more than 240,000 years ago...

  9. If you like reading about prehistory and want some recent recommendations for this genre, here’s a short thread about two books on the subject that I recently enjoyed.

  10. Watching a documentary about the Denali cave excavation in South Africa. Where they discovered, amazingly, an unknown member of our family tree - Homo Naledi. The story is fascinating :-)

On Netflix: "Unknown: Cave of Bones"

Recalls to mind my childhood: the whole family, watching b+w Nat. Geo. documentaries on Richard Leaky and his family's archeological expeditions. #goodTimes

  12. The #homonaledi papers might be the first high-profile test of #eLife new model of publishing reviewed preprints.

eLife reviewed the preprint and assessed it as follows: "... would be a landmark finding. However, the evidence for these claims is considered inadequate..."

At the same time, the Daily Princetonian reports that the "groundbreaking discoveries" have been "accepted" for publication.

  15. 💀 Prima facie... it seems #Homonaledi made burials, marks, and fire too.

But taking things at first view is not the way of science

"Despite the small size of the Homo naledi endocasts, they share several aspects of structure in common with other species of Homo, not found in other hominins or great apes, notably in the organization of the inferior frontal and lateral orbital gyri"

  18. #HomoNaledi were burying their #dead at least 100,000 years before #humans
Team discoverd H. naledi bodies deposited in fetal positions, indicating intentional #burials predating earliest known burials by #HomoSapiens by 100,000yr, suggesting brain size might not be definitive factor behind such complex behavior. Team also found crosshatched symbols engraved on the walls of the cave that could date as far back as 241,000–335,000 years, although testing is still ongoing.
