New year, new first line!

Ever since the Southampton train had left the station at Nine Elms in London that morning, the weather had increasingly worsened. Grey clouds covered the sky, and fat snowflakes came whirling through the open windows of the second-class carriage where Miss Eleanor Wilson was sitting.

In my historical romance Castle of the Wolf (a surprise inheritance! a castle in the Black Forest! a grumpy hero!), the heroine receives a very special deck of playing cards when she asks her motherly friend Mrs. Chisholm for advice concerning the marriage bed... 😁

#WritingWonders 30: Does your MC have a good fashion sense?

Maius, looking slightly confused: I mean, I know how to belt my tunic. 🤔

Caomh, very smugly: And I know how to unbelt it. 😁

Maius: Do you always have to--

Caomh: Yes. Always.

Maius: 🙄

#PennedPossibilities 22 — MC POV: What do you look forward to each week?

Maius, with a very private smile: My weekly visit to the Nemean Lion, that nice inn by the small harbor gate in Traiana.

Caomh, looks at Maius, then looks back at the interviewer and grins: Same.

For this WIP, I've decided to keep things simple and not use too many Latin terms. This leads to such interesting questions as to which English word to use instead of "insula". I ended up using "block" (as in a block of houses), and I hope nobody will get it into their heads that this is "too modern" for a hist rom set in antiquity.

Similarly, I did some frantic googling earlier today to figure out which word best to use for Roman "duumvir" - mayor or magistrate.

What a wonderful blast from the past! Today it's been seven years since I finished writing Eagle's Honor: Ravished, my m/f romance set in Roman antiquity.

Two secondary characters from this novel, Caius and Lucius, inspired me to write my very first m/m romance, The Centurion's Choice, which is set roughly ten years before Ravished.

"Surely, things would go well from here on, and he would be able to talk to Caomh, and perhaps it would turn out that the rumors weren't true after all."

Oh, my sweet summer child. You're in a Sandra Schwab novel, so OF COURSE, things won't go well from here on and the dreadful rumors will turn out to be all too true! ::insert evil laughter::
