In the U.S., when celebrating the Fourth today, remember: On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted a declaration that we should be a free country, but the Revolutionary War was far from over.
In Fairhaven, Massachusetts, a fort was built between 1775 and 1777 in what was then the town of Dartmouth. It was armed with cannons captured in the Bahamas in 1777. The fort was destroyed by the British during the raid on the harbor in 1778.
The war ended with the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty in 1783. The U.S. Constitution did not go into effect until 1789. If we had not continued fighting, nothing would have changed. (Photo: Fort Phoenix, Fairhaven, Massachusetts)
