Since now I am primarily working on longer fiction, I don't usually mention my local history writing. For 27+ years I was the Director of Tourism for my hometown, Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and for 10+ years my wife and I published a local magazine.

My advertising slogan for Fairhaven, "A Small Town With a Big History," is quite true. We were the home of Mayflower passenger John Cooke, the last surviving male Pilgrim; site of the first naval battle of the Revolution (It was a month before the one at Machias, Maine, by the way); the home of the first Japanese person to live in America; the launching place of Joshua Slocum's circumnavigation in the sloop Spray, the homestead of President FDR's maternal grandparents, and the home of Henry H. Rogers, one of America's wealthiest industrialists.

The gravestone is that of Jonathan Delano, an ancestor of President Ulysses S. Grant, Laura Ingalls Wilder, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and astronaut Alan Shepherd Jr. (photo by me)
