  1. Purple coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, is not native to New England, but is still a popular "native" plant that is widely available. I'm not a strict purist as far as natives go, though in most cases I aim for plants native to Massachusetts. This isn't one of those.

  2. In the U.S., when celebrating the Fourth today, remember: On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted a declaration that we should be a free country, but the Revolutionary War was far from over.

In Fairhaven, Massachusetts, a fort was built between 1775 and 1777 in what was then the town of Dartmouth. It was armed with cannons captured in the Bahamas in 1777. The fort was destroyed by the British during the raid on the harbor in 1778.

The war ended with the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty in 1783. The U.S. Constitution did not go into effect until 1789. If we had not continued fighting, nothing would have changed. (Photo: Fort Phoenix, Fairhaven, Massachusetts)

  3. Just across the #Acushnet River from where I live, #NewBedford, #Massachusetts. got an all-time record 37 inches of snow in this #Blizzard of '26. My house lost power for just an hour during the storm, but others in #FairhavenMA were out for 30 hours or more. Some still have no power since early Monday morning. Many roads are still not cleared. My little house is in good shape, but we still can't really leave it yet, except on foot.

  4. My town in southeastern Massachusetts got about 30 inches of snow today with higher drifts. Parts of MA and RI are breaking Blizzard of '78 records. A lot of my back yard was more than twice dog height and the area Broxo is standing in was shoveled 3 times today.

  5. I'll spend a bit on peanuts in the shell, but I won't buy meat to feed the #Crows However, I had a a small amount of trimmed raw chicken fat that I put out for them this morning.

  6. Roughly 8:30 to 9:00 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2026, following the snowstorm. We got about a foot with some deeper drifting here in Fairhaven, #Massachusetts The gang showed up.

  7. So, "feels like" temperature here in southeastern Massachusetts was 0° F this morning and snow blankets the ground, but the regular gang showed up.

  8. On October 27, I started to put peanuts out on a small table to attract crows to my yard. On the first two days, only blue jays and squirrels appeared. On Wednesday October 29, the crows showed up and three or four of them have been here every morning since. This morning, November 29, after a month of feeding my new friends, I found this shiny foil gum wrapper left on the ground next to the feeding station. It might be the best present I have ever been given.

  9. While the battle of the blue jays, squirrels, and crows goes on below, one keeps watch from high above.

  10. The morning #crow. One of four who have been visiting every morning. It's amazing how many peanuts they can pick up at once and fly off with.

  11. During the last week I have started putting peanuts out in the yard to attract crows. It is working. They are still very cautious so I won't get many photos yet, but I got this one through my kitchen window.

  12. Today my #MiniAussie Broxo (left) got to meet up with his brother Iota, who has lived on the opposite coast since they were separated at the age of 8 weeks almost six years ago. My niece has moved back to #Massachusetts from Oregon, so the siblings will be able to play together regularly now. Broxo takes after his dad's coloring and has brown eyes, while Iota is colored like their mother and has blue eyes.

  13. I have been letting the front yard grow out and I've been letting natives--milkweed, goldenrod, fleabane, etc. take over. I have also been planting native species. This year, I discovered a native volunteer, black cap raspberry, also called black raspberry, Rubus occidentalis. They aren't ripe yet, but what a great surprise to find!

  14. Foxglove Beard-Tongue, (penstemon digitalis), Lance Leaf Coreopsis, (coreopsis lanceolata), and Common Milkweed, (asclepias syriaca), and Daisy Fleabane, (erigeron annuus), are currently all in bloom in my front yard.

  15. The Beach Plum, Prunus maritima, I bought last year has burst into bloom in the front yard during the last few days. This year I planted a second one that has only been in the ground for a couple of weeks and is not ready to bloom. Since it is said you need at least two for cross pollination in order to get beach plums, I might not have fruit this year unless there is one growing somewhere else nearby. But sometimes gardening is about waiting. I'm happy that this one has flourished.

  16. My good boy Broxo at the beach this morning. West Island, part of the town of Fairhaven, MA, is in Buzzard's Bay near Cape Cod. Spring is arriving but it will be a while before last year's brown beach grass is replaced with this season's new growth. Except for home, this is Broxo's favorite place to be.

  17. It's not spring yet! The birds will soon be swooping in to gobble up these winterberries (Ilex verticillata) that have hung on through the winter until the time when they are most needed by wildlife. Not long ago one of "our" squirrels was in this shrub gathering a meal.

  18. First time the little guy got to the beach in a while, Coastal flooding and frigid temperatures have passed. Broxo did get to play with friends at the beach today, too, but those photos were not as good. The tower in the background is a WWII aircraft spotting station.

  19. I'm not crazy about pets dressed in clothes, but Broxo does look snazzy in his new coat on the morning of Christmas Eve at the beach.
