  2. Healing Beyond Ourselves: The Journey of Self-Awareness

Healing has taught us to understand ourselves in ways previous generations rarely discussed. But what if self-awareness is only the beginning? In this reflection, I explore the relationship between healing, compassion, accountability, and how our personal growth shapes the way we show up in the lives of others.

  3. Autistics often complain about how neurotypicals will say one thing and mean another, or there’s subtext or implied meaning, but sometimes we’ll do that as well but in a more direct fashion.

We’ll say things like “the lights are so bright,” but what we mean is “can you turn off the lights?” But if you don’t actually ask for that, they might not know that that’s what you want. They might just think that you’re complaining about something. 1/2

  5. Anytime you try a bit of healthy communication and no one has a bad reaction, that is a resounding success. Even if it felt completely ordinary. Even if the other person just said "OK" and moved on. 1/2

  6. I can still be completely honest and entirely myself, and also notice how I come across to others, what will affect them, and what they need to be okay right now.

  7. People want to know that they’re making a difference. So when they do something kind for you and you write a thank-you, you’re cluing them in to what difference their time, attention, or effort made. And for most people on the receiving end of that, that feels really good.

  9. When there are conflicting wants, or ideas of how to fulfill them, we can work together to find a solution that works for both of us, rather than settle for a win-lose or lose-lose trade off. 1/2

  10. You’re never going to know completely and perfectly exactly what someone is thinking, feeling, or how they're interpreting what you say. This isn’t your personal failing. This is simply the nature of communication between individuals who are two different people.

  11. There’s lots of internal states that are very, very different, but they can look the same on the outside and if people are just seeing those outside signals they’re not getting all of the information.

  12. Sometimes people have the capacity to hear the full truth and the emotional bandwidth and the energy for it, and sometimes they don’t. It’s not an all or nothing deal.

  13. In advance of a situation where you won’t have a lot of energy, it’s good to give general explanations beforehand (when you have the energy), so that in the moment it doesn’t look like you’re making excuses and the other person doesn’t make false assumptions.

  14. No one else will ever be able to reliably and consistently know what you need at all times, because they only have the outward markers of your needs, which are limited and can be misleading.
