Did you know? 🧠💀 The zombie myth originated from Haitian Vodou 🇭🇹🕷️ Enslaved Africans believed self unaliving would punish them with reanimation as the walking dead. 🤯 Over time, Vodou priests used zombies as free labor. 🎥 The concept evolved through US literature & film, becoming the flesh-eating creatures we know today 🧠💀 #ZombieMyth #HaitianVodou #Folklore #HorrorMovies

#MamanBrigitte is one of the Loa in #HaitianVodou and the consort of #BaronSamedi. Black roosters are often sacrificed to her and symbolise her in art. The association between black chickens and the African crossroads gods gives black fowl a powerful magical charge in their own right. Nine black feathers placed over the door lintels keep witches from entering the home and the feathers are popular in mojo bags, flannel bags containing one or more magical items.

It's the #DayOfHermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏
For #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm introducing African deities in my daily god toots. #Ayizan is a #Lwa of #Dahomean origin who protects the markets, public places, doors, and barriers, and has a deep knowledge of the spirit world. Her favorite tree is the palm tree and she is symbolised by mounds of earth sprinkled with oil and surrounded by fringes of palm. She is the wife of #PapaLegba.

It's the #DayOfAres / Mars' Day / #Tuesday! 🗡️
For #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm introducing African deities in my daily god toots. #BosouKoblamin is a violent #Loa in #HaitianVodou, capable of defeating his enemies. He is very popular during times of war. He protects his followers when they travel at night. #Bosou's appearance is that of a man with three horns representing strength, wildness, and violence. When a service is held, he is offered a pig, his favorite food.

Have a beautiful #DayOfAphrodite aka Venus' Day aka Frigg's Day aka Friday 🌹
For #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm introducing African deities in my daily god toots. The #Ezili or #Erzuli are a pantheon of feminine spirits in #HaitianVodou that are associated with femininity and erotic love. Vodou is a syncretistic religion assimilating traditions of West and Central Africa and Roman Catholicism. The Ezili are identified with Mary, Mother of Christ, and #Oshun, the #Yoruba #Orisha of love and feminity.

Nan Dòmi: An Initiate’s Journey Into Haitian Vodou by Mimerose Beaubrun; Madison Smartt Bell; D.J. Walker

Before Nan Dòmi, works about Vodou have concentrated on the spectacular outward manifestations of Vodou observance–hypnotic drumming and chanting, frenetic dancing, fits of spirit possession. But practically all reports on Vodou are outsider accounts, which means that they are stopped at the threshold.
Mimerose Beaubrun, educated as an anthropologist, set out to write another such work, but in the process she met the woman who would become her ultimate teacher and guide to the religion’s internal mysteries: Tante Tansia, whose knowledge, wisdom and spiritual power govern the text of Nan Dòmi.
