One of the cheapest, funnest, cutest, hardiest house plants to grow? Avocados! Seed + Jar with water = houseplant!
Step1. Ask a cafe for the pip/seed/stone or just eat one (guac any one!?!) and save the stone.
Step 2. Soak it overnight in water and then gently scratch off the browny skin covering (it will reveal the creamy stone).
Step 3. Wrap it in very damp paper towel, store it in an air-tight container or zip-loc bag. Under the sink is best (it tricks the seed into thinking it's in dark soil...but also, it's warm). After a few months, gently open it and check if any roots have formed. If not or the roots are too short, re-wet and give it a bit longer. If a go...
Step 4: Fill a narrow neck jar (so the seed doesn't fall in) with water and pop the seed on top with the roots in the water.
Step 5: Leave on a windowsill and just top up with whatever whenever the water isn't touching the roots.
Step 6: Enjoy! They can live for years in water. Have some on the go all the time so you have different sizes. NB: According to @sortius there's no use planting as the avs will be inedible unless you graft onto proper stock).
