  1. 1 CIBC: #American importers of #Canadian #goods hit by #tariffs could pursue #legalaction in the #US that would challenge the authority under which the #President imposed the new 50% #tariff. The President relied on provisions in a 1930 #trade act that had never been used in this fashion … 🧵

  2. “negotiations for a #Canada-U.S. #tradedeal collapsed late Friday, with #PrimeMinister #MarkCarney vowing to match U.S. President Donald Trump’s new 50 per cent tariffs on $28 billion worth of #Canadian #goods ‘dollar for dollar’.” #CanadaSky www.thestar.com/politics/fed...

  3. The decline in people’s ability to judge #quality isn’t just getting #worse in #politics , it’s happening in consumer #markets too. If you had the impression that #goods are much worse than they used to be, you are factually right! In both, politics and goods manufacturing many are exploiting this cognitive #decline. Exploring the reasons would be interesting; I strongly suspect #socialmedia manipulation is a major driver. #CriticalThinking theguardian.com/us-news/2026/a

'Simon Bridges wrote an op-ed for the #NZ Herald on 31 July 2026. It ran 1,200 words. It contained zero verifiable numbers, zero #economic #data, and zero engagement with the actual mechanism producing NZ's cost-of-living #crisis. What it contained was something far more revealing: a perfect specimen of the Muppets Show that has displaced #political accountability ...
'That family in South Auckland — the one Bridges pretends to speak for — that has been paying more for everything since 2021 while their #wages have fallen in real terms.
    '.....
'Bridges' op-ed, published under the headline "Our political aspirants need to cut out the silly business, it's serious economic times," opens with a Kabuki theatre of gravitas and closes with the same. Between those two pillars of self-congratulation, he advances a single argument: politicians should focus on "growing the metaphorical cake" rather than "redistributing our collective #earnings."
'This is the household metaphor in political dress. It is the same lunacy that tells #voters #government spending is a zero-sum transfer, that "#growth" is a force of #Nature rather than a #policy decision outcome...
'...When #capital keeps grabbing a larger share of output and #labour is left to takes less, #consumer spending contracts. Firms cannot sell #goods if workers lack the purchasing power to buy them...
'The real test of seriousness is ...: can you name the mechanism producing the outcome you claim to care about? Can you explain why NZ household #debt reached the unbearable 167% of disposable #income? Can you account for why real wages have fallen for five consecutive years? If you cannot, you are not being serious about the economy. You are performing a theatrical piece on seriousness that purposely fogs real reasons that produced the crisis.'

  5. “It was a light-hearted moment in what has been the most challenging chapter in Canada-US relations since the war of 1812, when the former wasn’t even a country yet.

But, for #America and the world, the episode also holds three important lessons about Donald Trump’s tariffs. And the president’s latest threat, issued on Monday, to hit #Canada with tariffs of 50 per cent on a wide range of #goods raises the stakes and shows how important it is for Canada to hold the line.
The first lesson is that retaliation works.

Where #China, for instance, has spent years carefully building geopolitical leverage through control of critical supply chains, Canada’s booze #boycott has been powered mostly by consumer choice and the decision of the provincially owned liquor companies of #Ontario and #Quebec not to buy US alcohol. And it turns out that rum and rosé can pack almost as much of a trade war punch as rare earths. US alcohol exports to Canada fell 70 per cent from 2024 to 2025, a $536mn loss for the US industry.”

There are others, however the Ban on *finished goods* and not *partial products* is hitting USA in #trade. ☺️.

  6. Anyone know of any functioning #LETS (Local Exchange Trading System) communities around the world?

While imperfect, they somewhat facilitate a community's ability to give and receive both #goods and #services. They're pretty easy to set up and run on today's ubiquitous tech.

I've been a member of three in recent decades, and they're a great way to get things moved and done when the dominant #currency is in short supply.

@ChrisMayLA6 - is this of interest?

  7. theguardian.com/politics/2026/. "Brexit has depressed #UK #exports to the #EU by 12%, & re-joining the #customs #union would undo only a fraction of the damage... #services sector exports to the EU are 7% lower than they would have been if the UK had remained in the EU, & #goods exports are 16% lower... the 'overwhelming majority' of the impact - 10% of the total 12% decline in exports - is accounted for by leaving the #SingleMarket." 8. theguardian.com/politics/2026/; theguardian.com/politics/2026/. The idea that #Starmer actually attempted to obtain a #SingleMarket, in #goods only, from #Brussels, when he ought to have known that it would be rejected out-of-hand is utterly risible, @ChrisMayLA6. He should know for a cast-iron fact that it's all 4 freedoms - or NONE of them! The #Tories wanted #free #movement of #capital, #goods & #services, but not labour, & were told they couldn't have their cake & eat it. The same rule applies!

  9. A new report from the Israeli legal NGO Global Echo, which was cited by the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", alleges that Israeli producers are systematically... news.osna.fm/?p=50213 | #news #conceal #eu #exported #goods

  10. theguardian.com/politics/2026/. Idiots! Our #Brexit #negotiators were told, repeatedly, by Michel Barnier for the #EU when they wanted 3 out of the 4 freedoms -#freedom of #movement for #goods, #services & #capital, but not #free movement of #labour - that it was all 4 freedoms or none of them. The #SingleMarket isn't an à la carte #menu, but a set one! When will our STUPID #politicians get that simple message through their thick skulls?

  11. @bss It can't, by its very nature. #Capitalism depends on #economic & #demographic #growth - ever-increasing #production of #goods & #services, & #consumption of them, with consumption of the #materials & #energy needed to produce them, alongside more #workers & #consumers. The result is #resource #scarcity, #waste, #pollution, loss of #wildlife #Habitat & #biodiversity, #GHG #emissions & #climatechange. A crash is inevitable.

  12. Other survey-based indicators suggest that #US manufactured #goods will continue to increase in price. The pricing component of the Institute for Supply Management’s Purchasing Manager’s Index for March registered at 78.3%, the highest level since June 2022, indicating that a growing number of respondents were paying more for their inputs.
