William Bates was an evangelical, Presbyterian minister. Here he talks of love, and says Christians should have fervent charity amongst ourselves. There are human and spiritual ties.
Some would insist that “Christianity” should win every Culture War controversy based on its prevalence, but then clam up the wallets when there are needs from beyond the immediate sect. Ex: Syrian, Iranian Christians.
How can you have fervent Charity?

Henry Melvill preaches: “Christianity: the Guardian of Human Life.” Ancient monarchs cared not to erect hospitals for all. Christianity did this: these are the trophies of Christianity.
Today, are hospitals viewed as the trophies of Christianity, or idols of stately power? Do we yawn at the destruction of hospitals? Is being a “brother’s keeper” so passé?
How can you act as if the sick and aged were to have a sacredness of human life?
