Are you looking for a place to test out that "dress go spinny" phenomenon, vigorously, in public, but with a degree of plausible deniability? Try checking out your local contra dance. Of course, if you don't like folk music with fiddles and guitars and such, then it's probably not for you. But if you do like that stuff, and would like some fun exercise too, this might just be your jam. I've been going to contra dances since I was a baby, and have been seeing cis men wear skirts at them since the 1990s. It's a pretty well established phenomenon at this point, there are even academic articles about it. I found an interesting blog post (linked) and also an intro to the Albuquerque contra dance that mentions it.

This isn't a guarantee that there won't be some gender binary bullshit at your particular dance. But there are regional dances, dances in the next town over, and so on. Generally speaking, the culture at a contra dance will be one of casual dress, with very little enforcement of binary gender roles. Like, the dances have "man" and "woman" parts to dance, but dancers have by and large determined that it's up to each individual which role they prefer. Some dances provide neckties, pins, or other markers to make it more obvious.

Then he put the book face down on the table and I fussed at him to use a bookmark instead! Of all the possible disagreements I thought I might have with my dad about #GenderTrouble , “facedown is not a bookmark” was not the one I was expecting.

I forget when I don’t hang out with them for a while how weird and adventurous my parents can be, not just in the roadtrip way, but openness to new ideas. I underestimate them.

while some of the theory is really interesting, i'm spending more and more time thinking about the inaccessibility of the language of this book. the copy i have features a preface she wrote in 1999, which responds to people who've critiqued her language. i thought her response amounted to 'you're smarter than you think, so try harder to understand.'
