  1. trademark update:
    - Oracle requested (and we agreed to) a 60-day extension in the cancellation case ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/v?pn
    - We’re now deep in discovery, producing extensive evidence that “JavaScript” is used generically across the industry and does not refer to Oracle products.

  2. Yesterday was the best day (recently) to re-boost this letter. Today is the second-best day to do so (sorry for the delay).

  3. We’re in the discovery phase to from Oracle: depositions, surveys, evidence, expert testimony. Costly, but vital to protect "JavaScript" for all.

  4. We're launching a GoFundMe to cover legal fees to trademark from Oracle.

We need to raise $200k to make full use of the discovery phase in the trademark cancelation petition. This is a critical step in protecting the JavaScript name for the whole community.

  6. update: Oracle has just filed more on their motion to dismiss the Fraud claim.
Here's a summary of where the case stands: deno.com/blog/deno-v-oracle3

  7. update: We just responded to Oracle's Motion to Dismiss our fraud claim in the JavaScript trademark cancellation.

Oracle argues submitting one valid specimen excuses submitting a fraudulent one. Our position: one legitimate submission doesn't erase another fraudulent act.

  8. @fedify

    hard question
for .js we all need to #freejavascript otherwise it is a trademark of the US total surveillance company.

.dev is consistent with the domain, otherwise ,org

  9. update: Oracle has informed us they won’t voluntarily withdraw their trademark on "JavaScript". Next: they’ll file their Answer and we’ll start discovery to show how "JavaScript" is widely recognized as a generic term and not controlled by Oracle.

  10. #FreeJavaScript update: Oracle has reached out and asked for an extension to respond to the JavaScript trademark cancellation petition. We've agreed to a 30 day extension - Feb 3.

  11. Allora una roba strana. Mastodon gira bene con LibreJS attivato gira tutto, l'unica cosa che non funziona è la schermata di login che non si carica e sono costretto a whitelistarlo ... #librejs #freejavascript #mastodon

  12. update: Oracle has reached out and asked for an extension to respond to the JavaScript trademark cancellation petition. We've agreed to a 30 day extension - Feb 3.

  13. Update on : Oracle has filed a notice of appearance, signaling engagement in the JavaScript trademark case. Aside from this, we’ve had no communication. Their response is due by January 4th.

  14. Let’s help free the #JavaScript trademark from #Oracle.

The JavaScript trademark is currently held by Oracle, but it is considered abandoned due to its non-use and widespread generic adoption. The ownership of this trademark creates confusion and impedes the utilization of the language’s name by community organizations. We strongly advocate for Oracle to release the trademark into the public domain.

  16. #FreeJavascript?
Hell no, it's already bad enough as it is, I don't wanna see that cursed thing roaming free.

  17. #Oracle failed to respond to the open letter to free the JavaScript trademark, signed by thousands of JS community members; @deno_land has now moved to actively request the US Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the trademark. Hopefully, if the silence from Oracle continues, this will happen on 4 January 2025. #FreeJavaScript

  18. It's done. Now it’s your turn, Oracle.

We’ve submitted a formal petition to cancel the JavaScript trademark: it is generic, Oracle has abandoned it, and Oracle committed fraud on the USPTO during the last trademark renewal.

Oracle has until January 4th to respond, or the case will go into default, which will result in the trademark being canceled.

    It's time to .
