‘#ForeverChemicals’ – the part of cleaning you don’t want to last
"Notable categories of cleaners that either may contain, or have historically contained, PFAS are:
- glass and hard surface cleaners
- fabric, upholstery, and #CarpetCleaners and treatments
- #waxes and polishes for #floors, #furniture, #cars and #boat vessels
- dishwashing rinse aids
- #AerosolPropellant-based #cleaners and #AirFresheners
- #paints and #coatings."Floor sealers and finishes – products that cure into a film once applied – often contain PFAS. During floor stripping and waxing, PFAS concentrations in dust and air particulate matter were one order of magnitude greater than typical residential indoor air and two orders of magnitude greater than outdoor air, according to a 2022 study.
"But now the cleaning products #Industry wants to keep consumers in the dark about the use of these chemicals in their brands. Earlier this month, a bill was introduced in Congress on behalf of leading household cleaning product makers that would deny Americans the right to know about #ToxicChemicals in cleaning products.
"The manufacturer #Reckitt applauded Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.) for introducing the bill, which would rob consumers of crucial information about the ingredients in their products. Reckitt makes popular household brands like #Lysol, #Woolite, #AirWick, #Vanish, #Calgon, among many others.
And industry giant #SCJohnson
called for a 'clear federal standard' on disclosing ingredients, knowing any such standard could take a decade or longer. The company manufactures #Glade, #Drano, #Pledge, #ScrubbingBubbles, #Shout and #Windex, along with many other products, including #Ziploc."Read more:

This article goes on to talk about how to limit #PFAS exposure. Too bad animals can't read news articles. But seriously, I wonder how many animals suffer from cancer as a result of PFAS? I mean, it's in the RAIN! Kinda hard to avoid rainwater -- especially if you live in nature and don't have water filters. smh
Study finds concerning contributing factor to childhood #cancer: ‘These findings have important public health implications’

January 19, 2024"One of the most tragic and mystifying conditions a human being can experience is childhood leukemia. This potentially deadly cancer occurs at an incredibly young age before the patient has even been exposed to most of the risk factors usually associated with cancer.
"However, Environmental Health News (EHN) reports that a recent large study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute links childhood leukemia to a frighteningly common type of chemical: PFAS.
"PFAS (#perfluoroalkyl and #polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as 'forever chemicals,' are a class of chemicals used in as many as 88% of #HouseholdProducts, especially those with #nonstick, #StainResistant, and #WaterResistant treatments. They’re called forever chemicals because they take an astronomically long time to break down, building up in the #environment instead as more are released.
"Unfortunately, PFAS have been found in water sources all over the world, including #raindrops, and they have been suspected as a likely cause of cancer."

Researchers create #plastic alternative that's #compostable in home and industrial settings

"The team worked with #polylactic acid, or #PLA, which has been used in packaging for over a decade. Instead of #petroleum (like typical plastic), it uses plant sugars and breaks down into water, carbon dioxide and lactic acid.
"But PLA can only break down in the heat of industrial #composters, not home composters. Even in industrial composters, PLA doesn't always break down quickly or completely.
"It can take as much as 20 days before PLA starts to be digested by microbes in an industrial compost setting, researchers said.
"To accelerate this process, the team incorporated what's called a 'thermoplastic starch' into PLA. This carbon-based starch helps the microbes in compost more easily break down the bioplastic.
"Adding the thermoplastic starch will not compromise the quality of PLA, such as the strength, clarity and other desirable features, researchers said in the release.
"Additionally, the bioplastic can be composted alongside food scraps. That means you wouldn't have to rinse food out of takeaway containers or coffee out of a disposable cup before throwing it out."

"PFAS in Food Packaging
The Department of Environmental Protection (Department) invites stakeholder comment on the attached department rule concept draft language which would prohibit manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors from offering for sale or for promotional purposes in Maine certain types of food packaging to which per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been intentionally introduced, as authorized by Maine Revised Statutes, Title 32, Section 1733(3-B).Maine law authorizes the Department to prohibit the sale of a food package to which PFAS have been intentionally introduced in any amount greater than an incidental presence if the Department determines that a safer alternative to the use of PFAS in a specific application to a food package is readily available in sufficient quantity and at a comparable cost, and that the safer alternative performs as well or better than PFAS in the specific application of PFAS to a food package.
In February 2021, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Washington DOE) published the Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances in Food Packaging Alternatives Assessment, identifying 4 types of food packaging that meet Washington’s statutory criteria for a prohibition:

Wraps and liners - Wax-coated alternatives
Plates - Clay-coated and reusable alternatives
Food boats - Clay-coated and reusable alternatives
Pizza boxes - Uncoated alternatives
In May 2022, Washington DOE published a second alternatives assessment report, Safer Alternatives to PFAS in Food Packaging, which modified their process in two ways: first, by adjusting the concept of food packaging application to be more focused on its function rather than the package’s name; second, by relying on marketability to demonstrate cost and availability rather than direct price comparison of final products. This report identified safer alternatives for all five of the food packaging applications reviewed:

Bags and sleeves - Densified paper and wax-coated options
Bowls - Clay-coated, #polylactic acid-coated, polylactic acid foam, and reusable options
Flat serviceware - Clay-coated, polylactic acid-coated, polylactic acid foam, and reusable options
Open-top containers - Clay-coated, densified paper, wax-coated, polylactic acid-coated, polylactic acid foam, aluminum, and reusable options
Closed containers - Clay-coated, polylactic acid-coated, polylactic acid foam, and aluminum options
Because language in Washington’s related law mirrors criteria for determination in Maine law, the Department proposes to rely on the conclusions in these reports that the safer alternatives identified perform as well as, or better, than PFAS in the specific applications of PFAS to the food package.
The Department requests written comment on this section of the Rule Chapter 80 Concept Draft by August 21, 2023.The Department intends to initiate formal rulemaking with the Board of Environmental Protection this fall to amend the existing Chapter 80 to incorporate these prohibitions. This will be a major substantive rulemaking subject to review by the legislature before final adoption.
